Making Flower Essences

Traditionally there are 2 ways to make flower essences.

The Sun Method

Fill a glass bowl with water (spring water is best) then fill with

flowers or buds and set in the sun for a number of hours. (solarization

traps the essence of the flower in the water).

The liquid should then be mixed with an equal part of preserving agent

(Bach used brandy, others use vodka, grain alcohol, vegetable glycerin

or red shiso and vinegar).

This is called the mother tincture. This can be used to make stock

bottles by placing a number of drops (2-7 is average) in a dropper

bottle filled with a mixture of water and preserving agent. The stock

bottle is stirred or " succussed " . The purpose of succussion is to

invigorate, imprint or spread the flower essence throughout the solution

in the bottle.

*SUCCUSSED=shaking the bottle while impacting it in the palm of your

hand, on a leather bound book or other similar surface.

The Boiling Method

Boil the flowers and buds in water (spring) and let simmer. The boiling

traps the essence in the water. After cooling and filtering, the same

process occurs to preserve the essence and to bottle it.
