Ear candles

I first got involved with ear candles about 5 years ago. I was

writing a story for a local alternative health newspaper (that has

since gone defunct due to lack of advertizer support) and decided to

try them on myself in order to write a better story.

Well, I have had a problem with itchy and infected ears since

childhood so I was secretly hoping it would help with that BUT I was

surprised that it noticeably helped my hearing!! Seriously!! The very

first session with the ear candles, I did 4 candles per ear and felt

no pain whatsoever. It was actually kind of soothing.

Afterwards, we cut open the part of the candle that was left (you

never let them burn down to far, it varies according to what the

manufacturers or healers suggest but I always stop when the flame is

still about 4 inches from my ear) and found it just FULL of wax. Big

gobs, like wads of used chewing gum. Disgusting to look at but kind

of fascinating in a way!

So I did my brother. Again, we got wax though not nearly as much I

got.

In the spirit of research, I ear candled several friends and my

mother. Again, the amount of wax dramatically differed from person to

person even though we were all using candles from the same

manufacturer and apparently from the same batch!

A couple of people had white or cream colored powder in their

candles. A local massage therapist that does ear candling in her

practice told me that the powder is dried candida.

Well, I had so much wax in my ears, that I did candles every weekend

for about 6 weeks. I started with 4 a week per each ear then tapered

down to 1 per ear. I found that the more I did it, the fewer candles

I was able to handle. A person should always stop if they feel any

discomfort!! At one point, I read on the Net that you can do 6

candles safely per ear and tried to do that but the 6th hurt, it got

too hot inside my ear, and I wound up actually developing tiny

blisters on my ear drum!! The doctor had never seen anything like

it!! But I don't blame the ear candles, I blame myself. I was curious

to see what would happen so I learned the hard way. Don't be like me.

I also sometimes deliberately take more of an herb or supplement than

recommended " just to see if it will do anything " and have had a case

or two of diahrea as a result, ha, ha.

But, back to my story, in the course of researching the newspaper

story that I wrote, I found one woman that hated ear candles. She

said she'd tried them and they gave her an ear infection.

Well, my research had said that after you candle someone, you need to

put a little bit of oil in the ear to protect it until the ear wax

can grow back. I always put a little olive oil in my ears and the

ears of people that I candle. I also warn them to not put water in

their ear for 24 hours. (If you shower, you just put a little cotton

in the ear and it keeps water from going down there.) Not one of the

people that I've candled have ever developed an ear infection

afterwards.

Ear candling has helped with my mother's tinnitus. She used to have

this horrible ringing in her ears all the time and it went away with

the ear candling. Like me, my Dad felt that he could hear better

after he got ear candled. (We both have had problems in the past with

ear wax having to be removed by the doctor because it doesn't come

out on it's own with us.)

Best of all, I haven't had to have a doctor remove my ear wax again.

It now works it's way out by itself and, if it slows down, then I

just do another candle and it starts moving on it's own again.

For some of you, that might sound strange, but it's true. I have had

this trouble since childhood, ear wax just doesn't work it's way out

the way it's supposed to. A few days after my 2nd ear candle

treatment, I was surprised as I was at my office and felt something

in my ear. A large plug of wax just fell out of my ear!! No wonder

I'd had mild hearing loss!!

Lots of people, including Dr. Weil, say that anything in the candle

is just wax from the candle itself and does not come from inside the

person's ear. Well, I took a candle one day and put it in a glass and

let it burn itself down to see if anything would be inside and I

didn't see anything like what's there when I do my own ears.

Plus one of the massage therapists in town uses little paper cups,

kind of like the pointed cups that you buy snow cones in, and she

gets ear wax in the paper cups. If it's wax from the ear candle

itself, why is it also being found in paper cups made without wax?

I don't know why or how the ear candles work, supposedly the warm air

goes down inside the candle (which is really more like this cone,

hollow on the inside) and then enters the ear then is drawn back out

by the flame...

I know if feels great and that if my ears itch a lot or hurt then I

usually will feel better if I do a candle. Lately I've had a bad

candida problem and I've been getting lots of the powder out instead

of wax but it really does feel good.

When I researched the article, I found that many cultures have used

ear candles for centuries and centuries. Native Americans make ear

candles with certain herbs mixed in with the wax of the candle so

that the smoke has some of the herb in it as it burns down.

I'm no big expert but I like ear candles and will continue to use

them. Just don't do it to yourself (at least not until you have LOTS

of practice and do it in front of a mirror) because it works best if

you're lying there and someone else handles the mechanics of watching

the candle. You have to be careful! Since you have fire so close to

your head, it's recommended that you put a towel on the head of the

person being candled so no ash or flame will fall on them. A pie

plate, the aluminum throw away kind, with a hole cut in the middle to

allow the candle through will work as well.

Well, that kind of sums up what I know about ear candles. I know I

found a ton of sites on the Net explaining how to do it (some with

photos) and the history of ear candles at the time I researched the

story. If anyone's got any questions, please don't hesitate to ask

and I'll do my best to answer it.

The best thing for me is that I've always been susceptible to ear

infections. I always get several ear infections and sinus infections

every winter. When I used to get ear infections, they were

excrutiatingly painful, like someone had driven an ice pick through

my ear drum.

I still get ear infections now and then but they no longer hurt the

way that they used to and they always feel better after I've done a

candle or two.

Thanks for sharing...it's very interesting...I'll have to go back to

that herbal store and find more information...they had instructions

for theirs and that cone shaped thing. It caught my interest because

I was looking for something to prevent the ear infections that my

kids always seem to get.

Annie,

I recently heard about a new research study that shows that children

given cod liver oil and the mineral Selenium daily had fewer and less

severe ear infections than other children. I couldn't find the

reference for it on this mess of a hard drive but if I come across it I

will send it along.

In my opinion, those two things are good for many many different

conditions/deficiencies and even if they didn't help ear aches they

would be good for you in lots of other ways. Cod liver oil is one of

the best things you can do for arthritis and things like that too...

Don't you love it when an " old wife's tale " is proven by science to be

true after all?? I know I get a good kick out of it!

Peace,

Mouse

Anna, I've seen signs for our local pharmacy touting ear candles and a woman in a class said she used ear candles. How do they work? I never understood how you use them, could you shed some light on it please! :) Karen, also in New Mexico

Sure, Karen. Basically, you lie down on a couch or whatever and the person

doing the candling puts the pointy end of the candle in your ear then lights

the other end. Often there's something between you and the candle's flame,

such as a piece of cardboard with a small hole in the middle just big enough

for the candle to fit in.

The person supervising, the person who is actually candling you, watches the

flame burn down and removes the candle from your ear before the flame gets

too close to you. I prefer to leave about 4 inches of candle between the

person being candled and the flame.

If there's lots of ash, the person doing the candling takes the candle out

of the ear of the person being candled and cuts off the ash part then

replaces the candle in the ear.

The person being candled should be able to hear the flame. If they can't,

it's possible something has stopped up the small end of the candle, so it's

wise to remove the candle and push a toothpick or other small sharp object

into the candle to clear a path so the smoke can come out the hole in the

pointy end of the candle again.

After the person is candled, you can use a Q-tip to remove some of the wax

or powder left in the ear. Just be careful that you're not just pushing it

BACK into into ear.

The person who is candled should have some oil, like olive oil or a mineral

oil, placed in their ear after their candled to coat the ear until ear wax

can come back and protect it later.

Ear wax DOES serve a purpose. Unfortunately, for some of us, like me, the

ear wax doesn't ever leave on it's own and needs to be prompted.

It all makes a lot of sense once you see someone do an ear candling, it's

hard to explain in words, but I really love using them.
