Guest guest
This an article by Romel Cordeiro L.Ac. L.M.T. with copyrights Want more referrals from the medical community? Do you think we need to upgrade the level of skills to accommodate the demand for specialized therapy to support the medical community? Do you like the possibility of your therapy to be a part of the Comprehensive Care in the soft tissue injury field of medicine? Are we satisfied with the standard of massage offered to the medical community? Is the image created by our profession lacking a medical angle? Are we satisfied with the percentage of referrals coming from the medical community for our services as massage therapists? The success of the referral plan is tied up to our success in creating a more medical oriented therapy to support patient recovery. The percentage of referrals coming from the medical community could increase if we, as the massage therapy profession, could offer more support to the existing primary care by making a joint effort of informing them about the benefits of our profession. In my opinion there are minimal referrals coming from the medical community towards our services for many reasons. One is that we as massage professionals don’t function as a whole to keep an open interactive relationship with these physicians and offer our specialized services as support to their existing primary care. Many countries around the world use a more Comprehensive approach utilizing alternative therapies for the best quality care to benefit patient recovery. We should challenge the notion that we are using a more or balanced Comprehensive Medical Care model in Hawaii. Insurance companies are concerned with the cost and patients are concerned with their recovery. For this ideal integrative goal between the massage profession and the medical doctors to be successful we need to meet all the expectations required to disclose the benefit that our massage therapy profession can offer valuable management of the patient’s recovery. We must understand that to keep this professional relationship with the physicians we need to upgrade our skills and we should collectively make an effort to keep the medical community informed of our potential to service their needs as an adjunctive therapy approach to increase rehabilitation levels in the total recovery process. It would take a creative mind to identify new opportunities and it will take a group effort to focus and work towards this professional relationship that will naturally lead to success of this Comprehensive care. This communication should be done in an organized fashion as a Whole from the massage community that has developed specializations, to the medical community in many different approaches, including seminars, talks, Symposium, Conference etc.. by the local massage therapists. This will take organization and it is a challenge for all of us if we can identify with a better care system in our services where we can use our highest skills and knowledge in a more synergetic way associated with the medical doctors for cases within our scope. With a joint effort we can create this bridge between our profession and the medical community’s needs concerning recovery in the soft tissue field of medicine. We need to create the opportunity to communicate with the medical group to bring the best of Complimentary and Alternative therapies. This supportive care approach reifornced by the refferal tool is already an approved system by many insurance companies, but not fully utilized by the medical community to our profession. Given the growing interest in complimentary and alternative medicine we should join forces to create this Care, that will generate referrals for our profession. Patients want to improve their quality of life and deserve this integration of our profession with the primary physicians. There is not doubt in my mind that with a joint effort from the massage community we can develop a superior patient recovery system using specialized practices that combines conventional and alternative therapy. This possibility is a reality that requires focus, time and energy in creating this support system. Once this relationship is strong, it should be self sustaining and will continue to grow.
