STROKE MANAGEMENT

by Dr. Leo Rebello

Millions of people suffer from stroke and resultant suffering. This article will not

go into the causes of stroke but teach you how to recognise stroke and save

the person, at home, at work place or while flying.

Let me simply STROKE diagnosis alphabetically.

S -- Ask the individual to smile.

T -- Ask the person to talk and utter a simple sentence, coherently.

R -- Ask him or her to raise both hands.

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, then

it means something is not

O

K

So, do one more confirmatory test.

Ask the person to stick out his/her tongue. If the tongue is

crooked, if it goes to one side, then it means

Emergency.

However, do not panic. Because, as a caregiver (first aider, nurse, doctor)

you have three hours with you. Immediately do the following:-

* Rest the patient.

* Wipe the sweat off the face of the patient with wet cloth.

* Give refreshing cold drink like limbu pani (sour lime water with sugar); not coke or pepsi.

* Let the patient lie down.

* Take a fine, clean needle, wipe it with Arnica mother tincture if available.

Puncture each ear lobe, draw out a drop of blood and apply homeopathic Arnica tincture

on the puncture point.

* After five minutes, puncture likewise each finger of the right and left hand

drawing one drop of blood from each finger, applying Arnica tincture

on each puncture point.

* Let the patient rest thereafter for about an hour.

* When the patient wakes up, mix 5 drops of Arnica and 5 drops

of Hypericum in two tablespoon of warm water and give orally.

* No food intake till three crucial hours are over. Arnica and Hypericum

are homeopathic remedies.

Unless the hospital is very nearby, the following should be avoided.

Panic, rushing the patient in that condition in a speeding

vehicle like an ambulance, on shaking stretchers, to the casualty or

emergency OPD, thence to the x-ray unit, on to the neurology

department where doctors may advice surgery.

This unnecessary movement and stress will cause further internal

bleeding and aggravate the patient's condition.

From Scare to Care should be our approach in all circumstances.
