Dear Sir,

 

With reference to the report, "Polio Resurfaces in Bhubaneswar", I

would like to point out that the Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV) campaign

needs a careful scrutiny before it is allowed to run rampant in the

coastal districts of the State, particularly so as only one migrant has

been identified with the disease which is caused more by unclean water,

pesticide, arsenic and fluoride contamination, and poor nutrition than

by other attributed causes. The Indian Medical Association has pointed

out that the OPV has caused upwards of 30,000 cases of Vaccine

Attributed Paralytic Polio (VAPP) up to the year 2005. Dr Yash Paul, a

senior pediatrician of the country, and Dr Pushpa M Bhargava

Vice-Chairman of the Planning Commission have written to the Health

Ministry as well as the National Human Rights Commission to try and

compensate the unfortunate victims. However their pleas have fallen on

deaf ears. The OPV has been phased out of the USA and European

Countries for its propensity to cause VAPP, a fact that has been

suppressed by both the Health Ministry as well as the concerned Health

Officials. Thus it is imperative that informed consent be obtained

before administering the vaccine, a proper surveillance and monitoring

system be set up and the VAPP victims be identified and compensated.

Senior members of the IMA have warned that the mOPV1, the vaccine

against the P1 strain of the polio virus, is being experimented in

India without following scientific protocols. Will the vaccine also be

tried on the hapless children of Orissa considering that it is the P1

strain that has been detected? Many questions have to be answered

before launching the extensive mass vaccination exercise starting the
