Genetically Modified Flu Vaccine's Entry to be Opposed.

To The Editor, Times of India, Bhubaneswar. DT: 06.01.2008 Dear Sir, This has reference to the article, "The best shot for avoiding flu" in the Bhubaneswar edition of TOI DT: 06.01.2008. Dr Nitin Shah, past President, IAP, maintains that the vaccine is highly effective, completely safe and without side effects. However the genetically modified virus derived vaccine is being opposed the world over due to its ineffectiveness and ability to cause such serious adverse effects as paralysis, polyneuritis, meningitis, encephalitis, multiple sclerosis, ataxia, aphasia, bronchitis, bronchopneumonia, chronic fatigue, gastrointestinal problems, sexual impotence, chronic "flu like" symptoms, among others, as per peer reviewed scientific studies published in reputed medical journals; partial

list included below. The vaccine has been criticised on the grounds that, as the flu virus strain changes every year, it is impossible to predict the nature of the virus in advance. The vaccine also contains egg protein and has caused severe allergies and deaths in persons sensitive to eggs. The vaccine contains the dreaded mercury containing additive Thiomersal. Dr Shah should be aware of the numerous controversies surrounding the vaccine. And above all, has the Govt of India sanctioned this vaccine? In an advertisement parents have been warned about vaccines that do not fall within the ambit of the Universal Immunisation Programme. Sadly we are seeing the demise of the last bastions of medical ethics. Can the medical community ever survive these blatant violations?
