Artificial Unintelligence

I made whole wheat French toast for breakfast this morning. While we were eating I asked my husband how could anyone be allergic to wheat. I ate lunch yesterday with someone who was. Once when I was having some strange headaches I was told that I was allergic to wheat. I continued to eat wheat. My headaches went away as strangely as they came. I diagnosed this phenomenon myself as stress.

The formal definition for allergy is an unusual sensitivity to a normally harmless substance that, when breathed in, ingested, or brought into contact with the skin, provokes a strong reaction from the person’s body. The informal definition is a strong dislike for or aversion to something.

People are allergic to peanuts. There are dire consequences to this allergy. I’ve encountered people who said they were allergic to trees and grass. How can we be allergic to the outdoors? We stay inside, conditioning our air. Perhaps, it’s not actually the trees and grass we are allergic to, but the chemical pollutants we are putting there. We have been told to protect our skin against the sun to prevent skin cancer. Now, we are rediscovering that healthy doses of vitamin D can prevent cancer. How can we be allergic to our own planet? Doesn’t being born here give us some type of immunity?

Then there is lactose intolerance. This is the very first substance that we were nourished with. The milk in the store after being highly processed and pasteurized hardly resembles what actually comes out of the cow. Once I drank pure unprocessed milk straight from a cow, an organic cow I might add, one allowed to roam freely in a large natural field and unaffected by chemicals. My chemically altered palette considered the taste highly controversial. If you go by definition number two, the informal one, you might say I was allergic, considering I had a strong dislike or aversion to this so-called milk at first taste.

On the other hand I’ve never heard anyone say I’m allergic to soft drinks or white sugar or white flour. The definition, however, says normally harmless. I personally would classify soft drinks, white sugar and white flour as harmful, or potentially harmful. We seem to have conditioned ourselves for these types of substances, at least for the short run. The long run is a different story when you consider the dis-eases that now are “normal.”

We continued our discussion, delving into how “un” natural we had become.

What is normal? Somehow, we’ve artificially tried to alter our bodies and environment, for what purpose I don’t know. Are we becoming Borg? We over process. We take vitamins out and put chemically produced ones back in. We take gluten out of bread, encapsulate it, and sell it in health food stores. We don’t use pesticides on our grass. Why should I buy Dandelion and Red Clover, packaged in the plastic bottle, at the health food store when it freely adorns my lawn. We produce flavors for foods using chemicals. God forbid that we should use an actual lemon to make lemon drops. We approach fragrances using the same concept. Why use lavender when there are scientists ready to produce the same sensation of smell chemically.

We even alter time, or the natural flow of it. Shouldn’t our calendar go with the cycles of the moon? It would certainly make more sense having twenty-eight daylong months. Can you ever remember exactly which months have thirty and thirty-one days? We correlate our sleep patterns to match our life style and work patterns. Then we produce pharmaceuticals to help us sleep and to keep us awake.

These are just some thoughts about how we are redesigning our bodies and our environment in an artificial manner. I would endeavor to say in an unintelligent manner, a manner that is producing much stress which I would like to define as something going against our natural rhythm which causes mental, emotional, or physical strain resulting in a dis-connect or dis-ease. There is so much material here that could be a book with the proper research.

Once thousands of years ago there was a language, Sanskrit. This could be called the wisest language considering it is complete unto itself. It is the only language found that does not have words or phases with multiple meanings. It is the language that completely makes sense to computers for this reason NASA wants to now use it in automated systems. In this Sanskrit language texts called Vedas were written. We still have some. They basically gave the instructions for life on this planet along with instructions for the care of our human bodies. Remarkable details were given. The use for every plant was given. The different branches of medicine were outlined. Every subject imaginable was discussed. There were books on the different forms of writing, art, accounting, history, etc. There was even a book discussing flying machines – yes, thousands of year old texts discussing this. There was a book discussing defense, but only defense, as offense was not in the original plan. We had all this valuable information telling us how to live, long healthy productive lives in harmony with the planet. I told my husband that everything must have been going smoothly, and then a man became in charge, and said, “Directions, we don’t need these, and threw them aside,” many of the books being lost down through the ages. That’s why we’re in the pickle we’re in.
