Aspartame And Psychiatric Disorders Ralph Walton,M.D.

Although

psychiatry is far from an exact science, over the past half century there has

been an explosive growth in our understanding of the human brain and

consequently in our ability to diagnose and treat mental disorders. We have

also become much more sophisticated about the impact of a variety of toxins on

psychological processes. I am convinced that one such toxin is aspartame.

I've never believed that we should have a category known as "mental" diseases; brain diseases, neurologicial diseases, etc., but not mental diseases, if by that we mean, a category of illnesses containing a "mysterious' element. I found this out to my satisfaction, by personal experience. My mom, who died at the age of 85, and suffered from serious "mental" problems, which began shortly after we lost my dad to cancer. 15 years after his death, I began gradually to learn a great deal about nutrition. At about the time my mom reached about the age of 80, I remember walking with her, to her home, and noticing something truly incredible. My mom, who up till that moment never failed to exhibit classical schizophrenic symptoms, suddenly turned to me, and spoke with total clarity and rationality. This clarity lasted the rest of the time I was with her, until I departed.

I was taken completely by surprise, never, for decades, seeing anything but the profound "inwardness," punctuated by severe hallucinations, violent anger and speech, and the emotional distance from even those closest to her, that charaterized the "mental" illness, which she suffered from, and which is regarded as completely baffling in the psyco analytical field. I was bewildered. Then something occured to me. I had, in a fit of frustration and anger, gone into her kitchen, the week before, and started throwing away all the junk food, all the plastic covered, greasy, sugary, artificial, additive laden, pesticide drenched, devitalized crap she was accustomed to eating. For a week she had been forced to eat a diet relatively free of anything but wholesome and nutritionally vital foods, and I believe that I saw the outcome on that day when she was completely lucid and socially connected, warm, open and as rational as anyone.

But this wasn't to last. Because, after this illuminating and hopeful week, the darkness returned. She learned how to overcome the obstacles we had placed in the way of her getting the junk she'd been accustomed to, and she never allowed her diet to be tampered with, again. In desperation I even looked for ways of preventing her from getting her hands on the money she'd need to buy more junk food. But she had cleverly started begging for money, on the street, from strangers, and, as you would expect, was as successful as any very old person could be expected to be, at this game. Finally, and completely exasperated, I yielded to her iron-clad refusal to eat wisely.

I'm sure professional and lay-person alike will hear this story with skepticism. But I remain convinced that what we call psycho-pathology has an organic, even a fundamentally nutritional basis. "You are what you eat," had come to mean much more to me, than I had previously suspected.
