DON'T FORGET TO SIGN PETITION TO STOP OBAMA'S $54 BILLION NUCLEAR LOAN

PROGRAM!

SENATE CLIMATE BILL TO BE UNVEILED SOON: TAKE NEW ACTION NOW TO STOP MORE

NUCLEAR PORK!

March 11, 2010

Thanks to everyone who has signed the petition to Congress to stop

President Obama's proposal for $54 billion in taxpayer loans for construction

of

new nuclear reactors.

More than 3,850 have signed so far, and that's great for the first week.

But this list is now nearly 20,000 people, so many, many people haven't yet

signed._ If you're one of them, please sign here now._

Recent public opinion polls show that tens of millions of Americans remain

opposed to new reactor construction, and even more are understandably

concerned about nuclear safety, radiation exposures, and radioactive waste.

Here

(http://org2.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2 & c=9UoI0SsnSLqm6b8oHpiB2BLf+\

posting about _a recent poll from Pew_

(http://org2.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2 & c=ea+l4qQ026VYjSCR9+J1ChLf+\

dZ+gohV) .

We can't reach all these people on our own: we need your help. Please do

everything you can to reach out, to forward the petition link to family,

friends, colleagues and organizational mailing lists. Here is the link:

And we need only $300 more to buy an ad that will reach 1/2 million

people! Can you help us with a small tax-deductible contribution so we can get

that ad placed and running? (You can see the ad on the front page of _our

website_

Taxpayer Bailout of Nuclear Power " ). _Please contribute here--and thank you!_

Meanwhile, we have our work cut out for us:

Published reports indicate that Sens. John Kerry (D-Mass.), Lindsay Graham

(R-SC) and Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) will unveil their new climate bill in

the next week or two. And these published reports (for example, _this one

from yesterday's New York Times_

(http://org2.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2 & c=0JlOCa/le6XyUnQl+9q6QxLf+\

dZ+gohV) ) also indicate that the bill

will be larded with taxpayer giveaways to the nuclear power industry. In

other words, taxpayers would be subsidizing giant companies like General

Electric, Progress Energy, Electricite de France, Exelon, Duke Power, Areva,

Westinghouse and more.

Wasting taxpayer money on nuclear power--which is both _ineffective at

reducing carbon emissions_

(http://org2.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2 & c=9Pa+mSXswnmSvCsubnk0qhLf+\

dZ+gohV) (its carbon footprint is 6 times

greater than wind power for the same amount of electricity, 2-3 times greater

than solar) and remains the most dangerous and expensive electricity source

available--is no way to fight climate change. In fact, it would be

counterproductive.

Let's stop the climate bill from becoming just another taxpayer gift to

huge energy companies. _We need to keep up the pressure, so we've set up a

new letter you can send to your Senators here_

(http://org2.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2 & c=5r1hxiaefk387mXzVW3IwxLf+\

dZ+gohV) . Tell them to

reject nuclear power in a climate bill, and to come up with real climate

solutions.

We can win these critical battles, but it won't be easy, it won't be fast,

and it will take all of us working together to do so. Thank you for your

activism, your support, your outreach, and all you do.
