the International Day of Peace Sept. 21.. This annual worldwide promotion

of peace, sustainability and transformation included hundreds of events

associated with 11 Days in more than 60 countries, and literally thousands of

Many of us in the U.S. are painfully aware of how s-l-o-w-l-y (if at all)

the special-interest-dominated centers of political and economic power are

moving toward prioritizing peace, sustainability and the common good -

despite Obama's election promising " real change " . Without knowing about We, The

World, filmmaker Eugene Jarecki makes the case for our Public Awareness &

Action Campaign:

 

" Unless we see our vote [for Obama] as part of a commitment to involve

ourselves consistently and unrelentingly in the political process, our vote is

wasted. This is because the forces that have led us to this economic,

military, and political precipice exert such awesome power over the mechanics

of Washington that no single candidate or group of legislators, whatever

their intentions, can possibly go up against them unless armed with an

irrepressible public mandate. "

To achieve " an irrepressible public mandate " , we need an ongoing

broad-based public awareness-raising and action campaign that consists of

collaborative, coordinated action by major players (like Amnesty International,

Greenpeace, the Clinton Global Initiative, MoveOn) and many others. WTW has

been

building such a _global collaboration_

rest of We, The World's community, we can put an end to the destructive

fragmentation and after-the-fact reactions to crises that have characterized

peace and sustainability movements for many years. The large organizations

frequently work alone and the rest are only sporadically coordinated. We are

seeing this pattern play out yet again over the last year with hastily

organized responses to the massive taxpayer bailout of the financial industry,

the recent healthcare protests and the climate change rallies in advance

of Copenhagen (which doesn't look promising for the change scientists are

calling for).

 

WTW's Awareness & Action Campaign focuses on coordinated prevention

(ongoing mass public awareness-raising and organizing) rather than fragmented
