Action Call: NY Bills To Protect Vaccine Exemptions

New Yorkers, today is your chance to let your legislators know how you

feel about protecting the medical and religious exemption in your state.

Assemblyman Richard Gottfried, Chair, New York State Assembly Committee on

Health, has introduced two bills - A.883 and A.880 - to protect your right to

exercise a religious exemption to vaccination and your doctor's right to

write a medical exemption to vaccination for your child without being subjected

to interrogation and harassment by state government officials.

Assembly Bill 883 reaffirms the right of citizens to exercise religious

beliefs and be protected from interrogation by state government employees or

representatives seeking to discredit those beliefs.

In recent years, there have been a growing number of instances in which

New York state officials and representatives have inappropriately challenged

the right of New York citizens to follow their religious beliefs and

exercise religious exemption to vaccination. No American should have their

religious beliefs subjected to questioning and judgment by government employees

or their representatives.

 

Assembly Bill 880 reaffirms the right of physicians to write a medical

exemption to vaccination for patients and for patients to file a medical

exemption to vaccination without the exemption being questioned by state

government employees or their representatives.

 

Licensed physicians or other qualified health care professionals should be

allowed to write a medical exemption to vaccination for patients they

consider, in their professional judgment, to be at high risk for suffering a

vaccine reaction, injury or death.

They should not be subjected to interrogation or harassment by New York

state government employees when exercising professional judgment and acting

to protect the health of their patients.
