Guest guest
Hi Health Activists and Consumers, I have reviewed the American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC) annual reports for 2006 and 2007. The last ones on their website _www.aapcc.org_ (http://www.aapcc.org) The AAPCC records all the instances in which someone comes to their centers reporting an adverse reaction from all forms of poisonings, from household products such as detergents or prescription drugs or dietary supplements. They reported that in 2006 5 people's deaths were associated with previous use of a dietary supplement. These were: Electrolyte & Minerals 3 Sodium 2 Zinc 1 Unknown Supplement 1 Asian Medicine 1 Total 5 That same year the total for Anticonvulsant Drugs was 13 Broken down as follows: Carbamazapine (Tegretol) 2 Phenytoin (Dilantin) 9 Valporic Acid(Depakene) 1 Other 1 For Cardivascular Drugs it was 43 The Report for 2007 recorded 3 deaths associated with dietary supplements as follows: Unknown Vitamin 1 Electrolyte-Mineral Magnesium 1 Herbal & Botanical Herb with Ephedra 1 Total 3 That same year The total of deaths associated with Anticonvulsants was 12 Broken Down as follows: Carbamazapine (Tegretol) 1 Phnytoin (Dilantin) 4 Valporic Acid (Depakene) 5 Other 2 Total 12 For all cardiovascular drugs it was 36 deaths. While the association does not prove the supplement or drug caused the death, it does indicate how relatively safe dietary supplements are. Since Ephedra was taken off the market by FDA in 2006, the numbers are even smaller than ever. The Ephedra removal was not warranted on the scanty evidence, but it does establish that FDA does have the authority to regulate dietary supplements, despite the misinformation frequently conveyed by the medical and pharmaceutical establishment.
