Jason,

do you mean peristalsis in the Stomach or intestines?

Cara

I am treating a very interesting case of Gastroparesis, and was wondering a) if anyone has treated this, but b) more importantly, from a western perspective, does anyone have a list of herbs that are know to increase peristalisis in the Stomach?> I assume these will be the herbs that i.e. descend the stomach, and move stagnation, like Zhi Shi etc.,. But just would like to see some confirmation.... Thanx,

Do you want herbs that are indicated for that western disease entity or ideas regarding how to handle it? I just looked up Gastroparesis in several books and came up dry. But that doesn’t stop me from thinking of about a dozen herbal strategies.

Although not strictly speaking a purely TCM approach, for what its worth, I've had success treating mild to moderate diabetic gastroparesis eclectically, prescribing capsules of ground ginger , asparagus root and artichoke ( 500mg capsules, two of each herb) combined with a broad- spectrum/ combination digestive enzyme preparation (e.g., Completegest from Enzymatic Therapy or more aggressive enzyme combinations (such as those containing ox bile), pancreatic enzymes, & c) taken a half hour before each meal. This regime permitted the patients to entirely suspend the Reglan they had been taking (the standard prescription pharmaceutical typically prescribed by MDs) with quite comparable results (I believe there are some studies available supporting ginger as having equivalent efficacy to Reglan for various gastric problems, postsurgical, & c). One patient has phased out the comparatively expensive artichoke and asparagus root supplements and is now taking only the cheap ginger and the enzymes with virtually the same results: she has not resumed Reglan and is without symptoms after two years. In most cases, I supported these herbs and supplements with regular acupuncture (including, e.g., St.36, which the patient can treat themselves with moxa or massage, & c ) Depending on the severity of your patient's gastroparesis, it might be worth trying this modest strategy for a while... at very least as a gentle alternative to the widely prescribed Reglan, which is capable of some pretty appalling side-effects (e.g., extrapyramidal effects, & c).
