Progressive

Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy

Hello,

On April 1st (yeah that's right) I was

diagnosed with PML. It is a

rare brain disease, found mostly in AIDS and MS patients.

My physician and most of the medical

community (yeah I've

searched) give little hope. Most estimates are that I have 2-4yrs,

and

that is on the harshist of HIV drugs.

I live in horrible state of being, there are

seizures and rages,

thunderstorms and fire, nothingness and tears.

I do not wish to die so soon, it seems quite

unreal. I also do not

relish living in this personal hell inside my mind.

Any help would be appreciated.

Fare Thee Well,

What's Taking So Long . .

..

The drug compound Peptide T is owned by the

National Institutes of Health (NIH) as it was invented there in

1986 where Drs Pert and Ruff were working as research

scientists.

It was created as a treatment for

HIV, and later shown to be a potent and non-toxic viral entry

inhibitor, the first in fact of this class of drug.

Advanced Immunity, Inc. (AITI), which had

licensed the rights to the drug from the NIH in 1992 has focused its

efforts on its psoriasis use over the past 10 years. The oversight for

administration of this license and development of the drug lies with

the NIH Office of Technology Transfer (OTT).

In December, 2004, AITI informed the OTT

that it was ceasing development of all uses of Peptide T.

Drs Pert and Ruff then formed a new company

and in January, 2005 applied to the OTT for an assignment of a license

to conduct studies and develop Peptide T for AIDS.

In the interim, new funding for those

studies has been obtained - however, trials can not begin until the

OTT causes a transfer of the license.

Polianova et al (Peptides, 2003) reports the positive results of a

small clinical trial whose funding was provided by the non-profit TINM

(The Institute for New Medicine) during the period when commercial

development was stalled.

That study found that peptide T is able

to greatly reduce viral load (proviral DNA ) - often to undetectable

levels - in the treatment-resistant, persistently infected monocytes

in both untreated patients and those stable on a cocktail regimen of

anti-retroviral therapy (HAART).

The failure of current therapies to flush

cellular reservoirs, such as the monocytes, are the main reason virus

persists in the body and re-infects new cells.

Additionally, new data from an earlier placebo-controlled study

conducted by the NIH in the mid-1990's shows that Peptide T reduces

plasma viral load compared to placebo. The NIMH has indicated it

intends to publish those data.

If the plasma and cellular antiviral effects are replicable in further

placebo-controlled trials, peptide T will be a useful adjunct therapy

to standard HAART regimens, especially since Phase I and II studies

found no toxicities and resistance to therapy was not evident after 6

months, the longest time examined.

Mission . . .

The Institute for New Medicine is a non-profit organization committed

to furthering research and education in the field of Integrative

Medicine.

The Institute is dedicated to promoting knowledge and understanding of

the interaction between mind, body, and spirit as it relates to the

health of the whole individual.

The Institute for New Medicine achieves its mission by . .

..

* Pursuing research that tests hypotheses

concerning the immune system and its bi-directional links to the

brain;

* Supporting

individuals and organizations with novel ideas for understanding the

multiple causes of disease in order to develop effective and non-toxic

treatments;

* Collaborating with

individuals and organizations who share common objectives and

goals;

* Holding

interdisciplinary meetings to develop new concepts of disease etiology

in order to discover new and effective treatments.

The Institute will expand the horizon of research in Integrative

Medicine through its dual missions of medical research and

post-graduate education and training.

The Institute stands at the cutting edge of political and medical

forces that can alter the course of medicine, forever.

RESEARCH

The Institute for New Medicine funds research which explores the

immune system and its defenses. It seeks to elucidate knowledge on

cellular communication within the organism.

" Most psychologists treat the mind

as disembodied, a phenomenon with little or no connection to the

physical body. Conversely physicians treat the body with no regard to

the mind or the emotions. But the body and mind are not separate, and

we cannot treat one without the other.

Research has shown that the body can and

must be healed through the mind and the mind can and must be healed

through the body. "

From " Molecules of Emotion "

by Candace B. Pert, Ph.D., published by

Scribner
