Indeed he said that if we were to keep alkalinity in the system it would maintain such a condition so as to immunise a person against certain contagious diseases. He also mentioned that it was not good to combine certain foodstuffs with others such as alkaline reacting foods with starches except for the one example of wheat. Things like citrus fruits with certain cereals are not recommended. In fact he said that to most people that it was the combination of different categories of foodstuffs i.e. proteins, fats, starches and vegetables which gives most disturbances to our bodies. Also emphasised was to avoid certain combinations of food stuffs at the same meal, things like starches and proteins at the same time, starches with vegetables are fine as are proteins with vegetables. This is the basis of the modern term of food combining, the reasons for not combining starches with proteins is because to digest proteins requires one sort of digestive chemicals and to digest starches requires a completely different sort. so as you can see when you eat both food stuffs together digestion can be more problematic. Occasionally on this list we share information about other healing systems with TCM pratitioners. It's a way of giving back for all the help we have received from TCM. Cayce is controversial because he was a psychic who delivered information on health (and spiritual) concerns while in trance. However, much of his health information has checked out over the years. Some of the information which he gave has since become standard medical treatments for various ailments. Much of his dietary advice, though radical at the time he gave it, is now recognized as sound. I would encourage readers to not " toss the baby out with the bath water " and dismiss Cayce's readings because of the source. Approach the information with the attitude that TCM healers traditionally approach information with: Does this treatment work, and if so, exactly when and under what circumstances, and what are the contraindications. In TCM there are cautions against eating when one is upset. It's hard on the Spleen and Liver in particular. What one can end up with is Liver Attacking Spleen and Liver Attacking Stomach. Wrecks havoc with the digestion. From a Western allopathic standpoint, emotional states can and do trigger changes in the body, from how much blood is sent to or diverted from the internal organs like the stomach to the muscles of the arms and legs to the balance of certain chemicals, enzymes, hormones, etc. in the body. All of which can impact on the body and on digestion. I also highly recommend looking into the TCM concept of a balanced diet. It's like nothing in Western allopathic medicine or even Cayce. A balanced meal in TCM terms is one which contains all 5 Flavors - sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and pungent - in the ratios the individual needs. This sounds really odd until one stops to realize that the flavors of certain foods come from chemicals in the foods, and those chemicals have other properties besides flavor. Note for those new to TCM: The Chinese Materia Medica - a list of healing substances used in will list the Flavor (aka Taste) of each healing substance as well as its thermal energy (does it produce a heating or cooling or neutral effect in the body) as well as the specific meridians and Organs that the substance has an affinity for. The Chinese also believe that diet is the first line of defense in good health. For those interested in learning more about using food to help heal, Henry C. There are gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. What this means is that some bacteria thrive in an alkaline environment whereas others thrive in an acidic environment. Most of the more common bacterial AND viral infections thrive in an acidic environment. For example, the common cold (viral), most cases of the flu (viral), etc. This is why some people tend to come down with colds after parties or holidays when they eat a lot of sweets - especially sweets with a lot of both fats and sugar. They have become too acidic because of all the sweets and fats, and any bacteria or viruses which they have in their bodies which thrive in a more acidic environment multiply unchecked. This also is the reason for the old home remedy (now dressed up in OTC cold medicines) include taking some baking soda in water. What this treatment does to to alkalize the body so the acid-thriving germs no longer have an acidic environment. BUT, like TCM, Cayce also recognized that there are differences among people, and that what works for some people can hurt others. There are no one-size-fits-all treatments in TCM or Cayce. Whereas most of the more common infections and medical conditions are acid- thriving, a few of the more serious and chronic conditions are due to individuals being too alkaline and needing to be more acidic. Western allopathic medicine does recognize that the pH (acid- alkaline balance) can impact health. But, Western allopathic medicine all too often doesn't go into this enough. There are books written for non-medical as well as medical personnel that does go into this in more detail. Not only will the pH affect germs in the body, it also will affect digestion, and even the emotions of individuals. Being too alkaline for some people or too acidic for others can result in people feeling nervous, anxious, depressed, etc. There are various buffering systems in the body which are supposed to keep the pH within certain limits because the person can die if s/he becomes too alkaline or too acidic. BUT, in some people the buffering systems are not working properly or get overwhelmed. Also, some people are sensitive to minute changes in pH. Even though the change is within the limits for life, the person's health problems are such that even a very slight change can trigger a host of problems. Diet is not the only thing that can trigger changes in pH. Breathing also can do it. For example, people who hyperventilate (for whatever reason) can trigger a condition called respiratory alkalosis. The person feels great anxiety, even panic. The person feels like s/he is smothering and not getting enough air. The person will breathe harder and faster in order to try to get that air. The irony is that in respiratory alkalosis, the oxygen levels are too high, and the carbon dioxide levels are too low. As the person breathes harder and faster, O2 levels rise still more, and CO2 levels drop even more. In cases of respiratory alkalosis, if you can get the person to hold his or her breath or breathe into a paper bag, the O2 level will drop, the CO2 level will rise, and the breathing problems and anxiety and panic stop. One additional note on pH and digestion. PH impacts on the absorption of certain minerals and substances. Some substances require a higher (alkaline) or lower (acidic) pH in order to be absorbed. This is why people on antiacids can trigger certain deficiences. The pH of their stomachs are too high (alkaline) to enable them to aborb enough of certain substances. The more antiacids they take, the worse their digestion and other health problems become. BTW, this pH-dependent availability of certain minerals is not just restricted to humans and other animals. It also apples to soil and plants. For example, if the pH of the soil is too alkaline, it will hold-on to whatever iron it has, unable to release it for plants. Acify the soil, and it will start to release that iron so the plant can use it. One sign that the plant does not have enough iron is that the veins of the leaves will remain green, but the rest of the leaves will yellow. Either there is not enough iron in the soil, or the pH of the soil is so high that the soil is not releasing iron for use by the plant. If the pH is ok, add iron. If there is enough iron, but the pH is too high (alkaline), lower the pH of the soil. If both too little iron is present AND the pH is too high, then add iron AND lower the pH.
