Natural Health Tips a) Some Natural Therapies for ACNE problems Pimples, Blackheads, Whiteheads and numerous other skin disorders are collectively known as ACNE. The problem is most prevalent in Teens and troubles some of the Seniors too.In this issue, I try to present some easy home remedies which you can adopt in daily routine. Although Tea tree oil (Melaleuca alternifolia)is known for its anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties, it's also recommended for ACNE because it has fewer or no side effects and no other skin irritations. 1. Lavender Oil (Lavandula angustifolia): Dab it onto individual skin blemishes. Its a powerful astringent and works similar to tea tree oil. 2. Fruits - Eat lot of Fruits. Fruit acids, also called alpha- hydroxy acids, can exfoliate these cells. Fruits rich in alpha- hydroxy acids include pineapple (especially the husks), grapes and strawberries. This can block your oil glands, which are majorly responsible for acne. You can also apply fruit based creams or lotions. 3. Burdock & Dandelion : Liver problems can also lead to Acne. So in order to make liver clear hormones, Burdock (Arctium lappa) and dandelion (Taraxacum officinale), taken internally, are liver tonics. Both herbs may be taken as tinctures (3060 drops/day) or as tea--one cup two to three times daily. 4. Chasteberry (Vitex agnus castus): To combat premenstrual breakouts, most naturopaths recommend 40 drops of liquid extract or one capsule of the Chasteberry dried extract each morning. 5. Water : Drink 8 or more glasses per day. It flushes you out, gives your cells vital moisture and causes your skin to " plump " a little, gives skin a moist, healthy look. Water helps your skin and other organs to remove waste and toxins from the body. 6. Aloe Vera and Jojoba Oil can also be used in creams or dab-ons and have great healing properties. 7. Eat watermelon or drink watermelon juice. 8. Drink tea made from carrots including the tops and beet tops. 9. Drink lukewarm water with 2 teaspoons of honey every morning on an empty stomach. This effectively lubricates the intestines. If one does not evacuate the intestines regularly, the toxins either end up in the liver or come out in the skin. ================================================================ b) Acorus Calamus (Sweet Flag) : Herb of the Fortnight... Sankrit Name : Vacha This herb is found all over the world, but probably came from India and North America. The plant grows 2 feet to 3.5 feet tall. The stem is triangular and sprouts from a thick root stock. The leaves have no stems, and the plant is not fruit bearing. It is a semi-aquatic herb with creeping rhizomes. The rhizomes are considered to possess sedative and analgesic properties. They are used for the treatment of epilepsy, chronic diarrhea and dysentery, bronchial catarrh, fever, glandular and abdominal tumors, kidney and liver complaints, rheumatism and eczema. It has been used in indigenous systems of medicine to improve memory retention and recall. I would suggest to Make a tea for dyspeptic disorders, gastritis, and ulcers. Use externally for rheumatism, gum disease, and angina. Anybody interested in Calamus oil may contact me for further details. ================================================================ c) Home Remedies for Sore Throat and a Stuffy Nose : Part II 1. Boil water with Cummins seeds. Drink it warm through out the day will give relief. 2. Take 8- 10 Tulsi leaves, 1-2 cloves of garlic, 1/2 inch piece ginger crushed and 3-4 black pepper cones, boil it in 1 cup of water. Add 1 tsp of honey to this and drink it warm. This is good for cold and cough with phlegm. 3. Mix equal parts of ginger juice and honey and have it 2-3 times in a day which is good for cough. 4. Mix 1 tsp of black pepper powder, 1tsp dried ginger powder, 1tsp long pepper powder, 1tsp liquorice root powder and 3- 4 sugar candy. It can be had when cough is there. People with high blood pressure should avoid eating liquorice as it can retain sodium and deplete potassium in the body. 5. You can also chew a small piece of liquorice root 2-3 times in a day for dry cough. 6. Ginger powder, black pepper powder and honey is also good for dry cough and can be had 3-4 times in a day. 7. 1 tsp turmeric, 2-3 tsp ginger juice, 2-3 tsp lime juice and 3 tsp honey can be mixed and taken 3 times for cough in a day. 8.Onion juice and honey will relieve irritation in the throat. 9. Thyme leaf juice is good for coughs and can be used for gargling. I sincerely invite all your contributions (tips, recipes), suggestions, question and answers which will be included in forthcoming editions at naturecure-owner ================================================================ 3. Recipe This Fortnight : Yoghurt Cheese (Perfect Alternative to Sour Cream and Heavy Salad Dressings) 1. Line a colander or strainer with a double layer of cheese -cloth or a coffee filter. You will be draining the whey (water) from the yogurt, leaving a thick, creamy yogurt cheese. 2. Set strainer over a bowl so that the bottom of the strainer is suspended about two inches from the bowl's bottom. 3. Spoon one pint plain yogurt into lined strainer. 4. Cover yogurt in strainer with wax paper or plastic wrap. 5. Place bowl and filled strainer in refrigerator. 6. Check every couple of hours and discard the whey that has drained into the bowl. (Yogurt will drain best if it is not sitting in a puddle of whey.) 7. Continue draining until yogurt cheese reaches the desired thickness and consistency. After 12 hours, you should have something that resembles sour cream. After one or two days, the yogurt should be as thick as cream cheese. 8. Use instead of sour cream or cream cheese in your favorite recipe. ================================================================ 4. Ask Sonzy : Ques-Ans Section Asked by : Iain Macdonald Ques : I have reddened and flaky skin on one of my shins as a result of insulin dependant diabetes. I believe it is called necrobiosism? It is getting me down - especially as I play a lot of squash and people sometimes ask me about it - which gets me more down and makes me very self consious about it. I also think the condition is worsening and it is sometimes sore and itchy. Any advice on a cure for this would be very much appreciated. Answer: Dear Iain, Thanks very much for your kind comments for our nature cure Newsletter. We hope to add value with every edition. As regards the problem, you are right. This condition is indeed called Necrobiosis Lipoidica Diabeticorum. Though there are no standard, established and proven cures for this type of allergy, it occurs mostly in Diabetics. There's no reason to feel down. If the skin on your shin is not ulcerating, care less about it except keeping the area clean. You should consult a dermatologist. Always keep a positive outlook. If people ask about it, give them a bold answer. Worries and depression only make it worse. Necrobiosis lipoidica is usually a minor skin complication of diabetes and one that is linked rather tenuously to the level of control, which in your case seems good. Sometimes, and especially with lesions on the legs, there is a significant cosmetic problem and very rarely the skin will ulcerate and even need surgical excision and grafting. There have been a few reports of successful treatment with oral steroids, but generally this is undesirable with someone who is diabetic. Injection of steroids into the skin around the lesion was popular for a time. These rashes is caused by Inflammation and degeneration of collagen tissues in the skin, possibly as a result of diabetes affecting the small blood vessels in the skin..Protect the area from injury. I emphasize on this as you play a lot of squash and that may hurt you accidentally. Take care. Make sure that your diabetes is well controlled. Remedies : Treat with topical steroids or intralesional steroids. (Ask Doctor). Many doctors prescribe oral pentoxifylline which helps to improve blood circulation. If you want to fade those skin rashes and colouration, there's a cream called Mederma.Go to this website WWW.MEDERMA.COM (Ofcourse, I don't get anything from them) and check it out for yourself. Mederma is sold at most pharmacies, but is kept behind the counter -- so you'll have to ask the pharmacist for it. A tube costs anywhere from $25 - $35. I read somewhere that , In 44 patients with psoriasis, lichen planus, chronic lichenified eczema, discoid lupus erythematosus and necrobiosis lipoidica, treatment with betamethasone applied 1-3 times under Actiderm once a week healed the lesions. The skin-coloured Actiderm is easy to apply and wear and does not loosen when taking a shower or hot bath. - SO: Acta-Derm- Venereol. 1989; 69(4): 355-7 (Ask a doctor about this) Here's a wonderful resource which explains in detail about Necrobiosis: http://www.emedicine.com/derm/topic283.htm I hope this helps.
