My son wants to know how to tell if a Rudraksha bead is a real bead or a wooden

one. He did say that plastic ones float. Are there any tests or identifying

signatures?

There are no definitive tests to test the authenticity of a Rudraksha

except the discerning eye of an expert. When looking at the bead

carefully, you'll find various deep dug lines separating the various

faces of the Rudraksha bead. Ironically, humans have known to use their

'extreme skill' and try to 'carve' lines into the Rudraksha or 'wipe'

them off, in order to change the faces or 'Mukhis' of the bead... i.e.

'alter' it according to their demands. It is extremely difficult to tell

a genuine and a spurious Rudraksha apart, but the discerning eye of an

expert can spot these 'manual interventions' and declare whether or not

the Rudraksha has been tampered with. Tests like the one which sinks in

water is original and the one that floats is a duplicate one , are not

right. Even the ones made of wood or plastic with some lead impregnated

in it can sink comfortably in water. The best way is to procure from

reliable source.

 

1 If you place a real rudraksh bead in a full glass of water, it would

drown in water.

 

2 Boil the rudraksh in water for continous 6 hours, if it is real

rudraksh there would not be any effect on the rudraksh bead, else if it

is artificial or two rudrakshs are joined together artificially(in case

of Gauri shanker bead), they will get seprated.

 

3 Rudraksh should not be confused with the shape and size. One should

carefully examine that Rudraksh bead have well defined, corns and

contours are natural, there are no cracks near the central hole and the

bead has a good health . Smaller size is also considered to be very

auspicious.

 

4. Rudraksh Bead shall not be broken from any end.
