yoga - childs pose

This is the first time I am posting to this group as I recently became a member.

My name is Ashley and I am 21 years old and live in new jersey. So I have

started to go to beginners yoga class, I have gone 3 times so far. And what I

have noticed is that when I am in childs pose, I feel like there is I guess you

would call it constriction in my neck and head. Like I feel that my circulation

is being cut off when I have my head and neck down in that position. I was

wondering if anyone has experienced this and if this is normal or not ? It is

very uncomfortable.

Thank you.

Ashley,

Hari Om !

Remember! If it is very uncomfortable, as you have

quoted, stop it doing. It's not an exercise, one must feel comfortable

always during the 'Yoga Practice' .

With best wishes,

Check to see if your shoulders are down away from the neck and head - lengthen

the whole spine especially the vertebraes around the neck  - you may even want

to spread the knees apart a bit more.  In your own space play with the pose and

use your intuitive ways to see what may be the cause - how to relax in the pose

for YOU!

Sorry, but I would have to disagree. To improve oneself in any way, one has to

go out of their comfort zone. Any time one " stretches " the body, mind or soul

causes some trepidation. Yoga is not always fun. However, there is a

difference between what seems unnatural or something that may injure a person

than just going beyond the comfort zone. Perhaps that is what you were trying

to say. In the case of child pose, that is what the poster seemed to indicate.

It would be hard for me to recommend something without knowing more where or

what the " pain " is. Usually, neck rolls helps most neck disorders. If the

original poster provides more information, then we can give a better answer.

I do agree with what you say but what I meant was that when a person practices

simple neck exercises as given under ATBSNR.com therapy, he enjoys doing it and

feels more comfortable than before. Thus while enjoying it, one self-cures most

neck problems concerned with C1 to C-7 vertebra. Many have stopped using the

Neck Collar for severe cervical spondylosis and other similar complaints.

Of course, I am saying this without knowing much about how and why about neck

rolls.

There is a very good neck stretch that has helped many of my students.

Lie on the stomach

extend the arms out to the sides

turn the head to the right - try to turn the head so that the entire ear is on

the floor - keep actively moving in the stretch

Keep the shoulders rolled forward toward the floor

Repeat on the left side.

This releases a lot of neck tension and is very easy to perform and is a very

supported and safe stretch.

It is true that there may be discomfort in yoga but correcting alignment and

stretching the uncomfortable areas will help you procede and advance.

This should be done under the observation of a trained practitioner though.
