WOW! A lot of interesting remedies here . . . I have none of those, but

I will say that this question has come up a few times in my LLL group,

and you'd be surprised to find out how many people simply aren't eating

and drinking right. Recent studies show that the normally recommended 8

glasses aren't necessarily enough. My husband is 6'2 " , 300 lbs (I know,

big!), and he needs like 14. I am 5'6, 135 lbs., but I still need about

11 or 12 since I am breastfeeding. When I don't drink enough, I can tell

it by the quality of my stools. Those morning headaches at the top of

your head can also be a sign of dehydration.

 

I would ask this person what kinds of grains she eats, and how much.

Wonder bread? Bagels? Rice crispies? They have zero fiber, and a lot

of people eat grains in only those forms. That sort of stuff will block

*anybody* up, especially if they aren't getting enough fiber. Can she do

whole grain cereals, whole grain breads, brown rice? And teach her that

the bread has to say " WHOLE wheat " , not just " wheat " .

 

Does she eat a lot of meat? Cheese? Those can block you up.

 

And lastly, how much fiber from fruit and veggies does she get? Bet you

anything she only gets a modest amount of veggies. A lot of people

hardly eat veggies at all. And when they do, they overcook them! Raw is

best!

 

Lastly, a gross testimony (since everything around here has to be first

hand!). When our oldest was three, he went to stay the weekend at

Grandma's. The entire weekend, he did not eat *ANY* vegetables or

fruits, and ate " junk " cereal. On Monday, he was so constipated he

cried. I called around trying to find a colonic irrigationist who would

do someone that little. I finally found a lady who did colonics and was

also a nurse, and she suggested a warm enema with oil. I did that, and

he was able to push it most of the way out and --- hit the scroll bar now

if you are squeamish --- I had to actually BREAK it the rest of the way

off.

:( Has never happened again, and never will as long as I'm in

charge!!!!

 

OK, now I'm done.

Most of us forget how important it is to drink water and lots of it. It's one of those things we just kinda take for granted.

I suffered from lifelong chronic constipation, just like my father. Dad

" fixed " his problem by turning to fiber. He takes psyllium on a daily basis,

the generic kind from the coop.

 

I found my problem solved itself once I started taking enzymes between

meals, not with meals. (I'd been taking them with meals but that didn't

change anything.) I'm not sure if all enzyme products CAN be taken between

meals but the stuff that I use, called " The Ultimate Enzyme, " can be used

either way.

 

My friend's husband, with chronic constipation, started taking cod liver oil

pills and that solved his problem.

 

So expirement and see what works for you.

Try squeeze of half a lemon in a glass of warm water each morning before

breakfast. Increases the bile flow and " cleans the body out " . Works with

all my constipative patients and is cheap to use. Also check on fibre (not

always the bran variety, but maybe fruits, nuts, raw vegetables etc) and

maybe if you eat yoghurt (preferably a quality one with no or low sugar) or

cereal in the morning or have smoothies add LSA (Linseed, Sunflower and

Almonds - grounded) to the diet, this also helps.

Have you tried prunes or prune juice. Maybe give her more veggies.

More fiber and water, less fruit juice. The pectin in

fruit juices can back a child up very fast. Replacing

white bread and grains with whole grains...etc Juice

is concentrated so give whole fruit instead. Fresh

vegetables instead of canned or processed. Brown rice

instead of white..that kind of thing makes a

difference in anyone's diet. Less cheese or dairy.

Cheese is a big one when it comes to constipation in

kids and adults.

some fruit if they won't eat it plain.

 

I would love every parent, especially if

there is an ADHD child in the house, to

read this one book, based on the

Acidophilus will do wonders. You can find a version at health food

stores specifically made for kids. My daughter almost thinks she is

getting a treat everytime she gets an acidophilus pill. Make sure to

take care of it quick-this can become a chronic problem. Obviously

though, it would also help to change her diet to have more fiber and

greens and less binding foods like milk and cheese. I personally use

magnesium because of many benefits, but it has also helped with

constipation, although I don't know about a 7 year old how much she

could take.

thanks for the feedback.. I am having a bit of troubel geeting watter in him

barely a cup a day..but still trying.. he could probably use more fruits in his

diet.. that is hard as well..

One way to increase water intake in kids is to make it

taste better. Use of Lime or lemon in the water often

will improve the taste and give needed nutrients at

the same time. Water down the juices. If water is what

is available, he will start to drink it. Cut the milk

way down and only offer it at meals, not in between.

No Koolaid or pop!

 

My oldest son drank juice like crazy, would get

constipated and then get fissures in his rectum from

the straining. I watered down the juice and gave him

more water. This is the same son who would get up and

down from the table a million times and pick at his

food. I started to take his plate away and put it up.

Pretty soon he got hungry enough to stay put and eat

it in a sitting.

 

Fruits are simple...an apple a day, an orange, banana

etc...offer them instead of other sugared snacks or

breads. Carrot sticks, celery sticks with peanut

butter and raisins, My kids like cabbage cut up or

turnips sliced up ALL RAW!

 

One thing a pediatrician told me when my kids were

babies....start them on veggies before you start

fruits. You won't have a problem with eating veggies

if you do that. And wait til last to add the sweet

veggies. Once babies get accustomed to sweet, they

won't eat the others. I did what he said and I don't

have picky eaters for kids. They eat all sorts of

veggies that most kids and adults won't touch. I can

take them out to eat at a Buffet for example and most

of their plates will be filled with veggies and

fruits!

I did exactly that with my 3 children - they used to drink juice

then I started watering it down - did it in stages 1/4 water to 3/4

juice so they didn't really notice it!!! Now they mainly ask for

water and if they do ask for juice it's just over 3/4 water to less

than 1/4 juice!!!! All Dairy products upset my daughters digestive

system.

now you tell me.. where were you when they were lil babes lol acutaly my son is

less picky then my daughter, but she is impossible.. if I'm lucky she will eat a

apple..and salad but hardly any other veggies.. she will eat the fruits though.

Leave a jug (1 litre) of water overnight and drink it the first thing

in the morning (i.e. before brushing your teeth). That should be able

to induced soft stool. Our family have used this technique. No harm

trying.

I will share with you what has worked very well for me. I added a couple

apples a day to my diet and have never had any problems since.

Now if I am really constipated and haven't eaten any apples I will have a

big bowl of Kashi for breakfast and then a giant salad for lunch. Make sure

the salad is full of greens (not iceberg lettuce)--this breakfast and lunch

comb

o seriously cleaned me out!! Make sure to drink water too.

Sharon,

I agree with the moderator! You could have a problem with your bile

production and/or gallbladder! Should have this check out before you

proceed. Sometimes supplements like soy-based powder lecithin can cause

constipation; It did in my case. Magnesium is a good supplement for

most people... you should be using it now for many reasons... excess

supplemental calcium needs to be balanced with magnesium, by itself,

calcium can sometimes cause constipation!

First you need to find out the cause of the constipation. As someone else

mentioned, a gall bladder cleanse would be a good place to start. Do you

have hormonal imbalances or any symptoms of such? I get constipated when my

thyroid is low and/or when my estrogen is low. Are you taking an iron

supplement? Iron causes constipation, as do some rx meds.

 

To help in the meantime until you figure it out, drink LOTS of pure water,

and take magnesium supplements. Magnesium amino acid chelate, or a blend is

best, but mag ox is the best stool softener as it is not as readily

absorbed.

I have struggled with a lifetime of constipation and so I feel, with

my experience, I'm pretty qualified to comment on the issue.

Personally I believe that it's the result of too many antibiotics as a

child. I believe that they horribly affect the stomach's ability to

digest food properly. I have implemented several things, all of which

work for me to some degree or another.

 

Juicing - you're getting the nutrients, but not as much bulk

Walking

Cut out all refined grains (which as a vegan, I assume you already

have)

Flax - grind it and eat in yogurt, oatmeal, etc.

www.dr-schulze.com Use formula 1 which is a combination of herbs and

things such as habanero pepper and garlic. They help in the same

 

sense as if you had a really spicey meal.

Yogurt, Kiefer, probiotics - help to restore the good bacteria which

helps your stomach digest properly

Digestive enzymes - as we age, our stomach needs a little help with

digesting our food.

Colonics - you can go to a clinic to have this done in depth, but a

simple water enema done at home can do the trick. (And, no,

they're not addictive. But, even if they were, what's better: a

life full of constipation, or a life doing an occasional water

enema.)

Colon cleanse - you may just need a good cleaning out so that you can

get a " fresh " start.

Sometimes when your body is going through hormonal changes it reacts in

strange ways. Taking additional supplements or even minerals can sometimes

make the problems worse.

 

Ignore the psyllium husks ­ they don¹t necessarily help with constipation ­

you just know you¹re not cleaned out!

 

You mention drinking juice. Consider the following...

 

Is the juice fresh or commercial? Commercial juices tend to be sugar water.

 

If fresh ­ is it blended or juiced with juice machine? Blended juice tend to

have dead enzymes ­ so again you may be getting the sugar (fructose) part

alone. You really need the other co-factors such as enzymes.

 

Is it vegetable or fruit juice? Fruit juices tend to be too high in sugar

content and you can overdo the juice easily. Fruit is best eaten whole ­ you

get full faster and you have the enzymes.

 

Vegetable juices (squeezed) is best as the fructose content is a lot lower.

You¹re supposed to take the vegetable pulp too. Again for the enzymes and it

makes you regular.

 

Now if you¹re drinking fruit juice and lots and blended and commercial ­ you

may be too acidic from the sugar! The more ³ands², the more likely you¹re

acidic.

 

If you¹re very acidic ­ you may experience constipation ­ hormonal changes

not withstanding.

 

Have you noticed more frequent dryness of the mouth, or bad breath or that

your pores permeate a bad odor? Or your tongue is furry whitish in texture?

 

If yes again this could be sign of acidity or as TCM diagnose ³heaty² which

can cause severe constipation.

 

From personal experience, a daily regimen of probiotics worked wonders for

me! I¹ve been very regular since.
