I have had this happen on enough occasions that when working w/ peri

menopausal women I have then do a 30 day salvia hormonal panel. In the

majority of cases the women turns out to be estrogen dominant leading to

weight gain in the pelvis/thighs and the excessive estrogen would

explain the period also. Causes very, generally it has to do w/

lifestyle stress, causing the Adrenaline, DHEA to be prioritized over

the progesterone. Not a TCM explanation, more an integrative approach.

Hope it is helpful.

I think your comments are interesting, especially since they go into

a level of detail that TCM cannot readily duplicate. Do you, then,

interpret these findings in terms of TCM (for example,

differentiating kidney yin and kidney yang) and treat with herbal

formulas and acupuncture?

yes I do interpret these findings, along w/ s & s, in terms of TCM and I

treat accordingly w/ acu/herbs. However, in my experience you will still

need to supplement w/ progesterone and in some cases Cal d gluterate to

control the excess estrogen. In some cases if the woman can change her

lifestyle somewhat to mediate the stress and reduce the enviromental

exogenous hormones, the supplements can be deleted. I would suggest that

this is do to the effects of the herbs/acu. A question which would be

of interest is if you could resolve the Lv stagnation w/ a TCM

approach would the estrogen/progesterone ratios move back into a normal

range (Lv phase 2 pathways). Possible Bob Flaws would have some input on

this question.

The question you raise about level of detail addresses an issue about

the evolution of our practice. For me these tools (urine test, blood

test, hormonal panels) allow one to access a greater level of

information which can then be integrated into the frame work of s & s.

Would be interesting to know if this approach is being used in current

TCM school teachings.

I don't have the original post, but I seem to recall the original

treatment protocols mentioned were only long term 'heavy' yin tonic

formulas. Would can you say that long term use of yin tonics will add

yin to the body - which you might say could be related to weight gain?

Thinking about some menopause formulas, like the famous & effective Er

Xian Tang, is mostly a Yang tonic formula... With some yin tonics.

Using heavy yin tonics for a long time is going to weaken the Spleen Qi

with resulting Damp accumulation. Again, I don't have the original

post, so this issue may have already been addressed.

This is undoubtedly one of the ways it can happen since spleen qi

and insulin levels have a lot in common in the pulses.

John,

Is she not growing in height? Is she emaciated? If she is healthy, then

maybe it's just her body and the way it works and there's really no fixing

it. I have a nephew that's 6 years old and he looks like he's 4, because of

genetics and his metabolism. The dr.s have said... It's just the way he

was made.

My dad was like this. They tried everything. Nothing worked. He just has

a really high metabolism. The only time he got over 175 (He's 6 feet tall)

was when he was in the Army and was driving a jeep for a general, he ate

good, did little work and pretty much wasn't asked to do anything other than

drive, he actually got up to 200 lbs.

I have a feeling this girl is like that. My dad weighed all of 97 lbs when

he was a senior in High school. He was skinny...

He has now settled at around 175. She may just be one of those kids with

super metabolisms and she will need to eat more than she puts out... Now

don't we all wish we had this problem.

If she doesn't have anything medically wrong with her except that she isn't

gaining weight, the only thing I would suggest is adding more calories where

they can.

Weight Gain

Hello All,

I have a very healthy looking four year old neighbor that has not

gained an ounce in the past year. The doctors are not able to come up

with any ideas as she look and checks out well. Any information/ideas

to help her to gain weight is most appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi John,

My daughter was like this. We put her through all sorts of tests but I

shouldn't have bothered. I tried to get her to eat more--shouldn't have

bothered. She was perfectly healthy--just small. Wasted a lot of anxiety

over a normal kid. I didn't factor in that she might take after her very

small paternal grandmother (my family is full of tall people).

If she has plenty of energy; a normal heart; no skin problems; no bowel

problems; and good hair then she's probably just fine.

Hi

When I was small, I was really skinnny and petit, my parents kept giving me

all kinds

of vitamin supplements, fcod liver oil capsules, try and make me eat calorie

laden food etc.

But i was very energetic, and i guess that 's the way i was built. Now after

4 kids

and on threshold of 40's i am still petit, i tend to put on but not much,

and can lose

easily, i look young for my age, I don't have to worry so mcuh about weight,

though

i don't really do much exercise, and i am healthy, so maybe in the long run

its good

if later on life u don't have to worry so much about what weight problems.

I used to be like that, wish I still was. My mom used to complain

that I didn't eat enough to keep a bird alive. However, I was

healthy, active, and ate when I was hungry. If you are worried about

nutrition, add a daily vitamin.

As I grew tall, I got thinner, but it was not a problem, just my

body build. Now I am overweight (all that harping about eating

enough was successfull) but still the thinnest one in the family.

At the supermarket the other day I saw one tabloid with a front

cover showing the too skinny bodies of some actresses with the

headline " dangerously thin " , and another with the Headline " who's

packing it on " and some of the most embarassing and unflattering

pictures of various actresses (mostly from the back), none of whom I

would describe as fat.

Focusing on body size in a kid can be destructive. It is most

important that she feel that she is just right, because she probably

is. During growth, some kids get taller and skinnier as they grow.

Some kids have growth spurts and other times remain the same size

for a while. Everyone is different.

There might be some reason for not increasing the weight . It should be found

out & treated . Then the weight can be increased upto certain limit . It can

depend upon the age , sex , work , habbits , food , exercise , stress any

unhealthy condition etc . It is advised to contact any nearest Ayur Vaidya or to

consult online .
