Guest guest
Ayurveda may be considered by many to be a time-tested Indian system of healing, but lack of scientific testing in this field denies it a global acceptance. To integrate this ancient wisdom with emerging technologies, C-DAC (Centre for Development of Advanced Computing) has developed a software called 'Ayusoft'. http://www.cdac.in/HTmL/hbcg/ayusoft/AyuSoft_Brochure.pdf Many city Ayurvedic practitioners and a few colleges like the Bharati Vidya peeth College of Ayurveda and the Tilak Ayurveda Mahavidyalaya have already started using this software. Unlike other systems which focus on single areas like plant database or medical formulations, Ayusoft has digitalised most of the fundamental principles of Ayurveda. Besides, this can be used for diagnosis purpose by the doctors. Dr. Narendra M Pendse, MD (Ayurveda), ayurvedic consultant at the Seth Tarachand Ramnath Ayurvedic Hospital and Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital, says, " It's of great help in clinical practice for proper documentation and retrieval of cases. As a tool to help precise clinical diagnosis, this provides an easily accessible database of disease descriptions from classical references from many original reputed texts of Ayurveda. This helps to fine tune the selection of time-tested multiple treatment options from the original texts, as also for taking ga second opinion of other ayurvedic experts, using the facility to import and export clinical information. It can also be used for patient education using the 'prakriti' (constitution) assessment and guidance feature. " Dr Pendse has also found it useful in classroom learning, teaching and research work. It offers easily accessible and searchable database from a wide source of ayurvedic books, provides statistical analysis tools, and can be used for multi-centric clinical trials. " On the flip side, Ayusoft comes at a price (Rs.15, 000) for a new practitioner requires good computer speed and space for optimum usage of software and cannot be used by individuals who do not have adequate ayurvedic training due to the usage of Sanskrit terminology, " Pendse said. The Ayusoft development team comprised of IT professional and Ayurveda experts of national as well as international repute. Explaining the working of the software, Dr. Pramod Dhumal, group leader of the project at C-DAC, says, " It helps in diagnosing ailments and can be of great use to the doctors. Based on signs, symptoms and causative factors, it provides probable diagnosis and specific treatment in the form of formulations, single drugs, therapeutic procedures, and diet and lifestyle advice. It provides precise diagnosis up to the specific conditions and sub-types of diseases and a display of probable diseases based on probability and weightage. " Though Dr. Yogini Ramchandra Kulkarni, who runs a clinic in Budhwar Peth, does not use this software for patient diagnosis, she finds it helpful in research and data analysis with the help of six books on Ayurveda including 'Charak Samhita' and 'Sushrut Samhita'. Citing an example, she explains that analysis of diseases like chronic renal failure is very easy with this tool. For Dr. Sachin Kulkakarni, lecturer at Bharati Vidyapeeth College of Ayurveda, it is a time saving tool. Installed in the college library, it is being used by students and teachers alike. Kulkarni says, " Previously, to search the meaning of a word it used to take months going through all the samhitas. Now the meaning is available at the click of a mouse. " Agrees Dr Mihir Hajarnavis, lecturer at Tilak Ayurveda Mahavidyalaya, who opinions, " It helps us in teaching students about constitutional analysis. That apart, the encyclopedia is quite comprehensive. " Both of them feel that there is need to streamline the questionnaire, required for case analysis. Presently it takes around 45 minutes to fill up the form, which is time-consuming with a patient who is likely to get impatient. Also, the audio visual section can be upgraded with more pictures and videos. " In response, Dr. Dhumal says, " There is always scope for upgradation and this is just the first version. We have launched a desktop and intranet versions. Work is going on for the internet version. With time the system will be smoothened. Pros * Covers all practical needs from patient registration, case detailing, follow up and prescriptions * Documentation of modern diagnosis, signs-symptoms, causative factors, diet, lifestyles, investigations, images and audio-video files etc. Cons * Ayusoft comes at a price (Rs.15,000) for a new practitioner * Requires good computer speed and space for optimum usage of software. Cannot be used by individuals who do not have any ayurvedic training.
