Guest guest
Hi All My son who is 6 1/2 years old gets some cough and cold during the spring season. The cough keeps continuing for quite some time. He had the same last year also. His PCP provided him albuterol inhaler and still the cough did not go away. We had him checked by an allergist, last year and his lungs using a spirometry test and everything was ok. The allergist explained that when there is a cold and cough we need to make sure that the nasal path is cleared. So the allergist suggested using saline drops to clear the nose for 2-3 months and using " Nasonex " once a day for 2 weeks or so. Things started getting better and over the course of time by May 2008 he became fine and stayed fine for a year. He did get cold inbetween but it would only last 2-3 days and with steaming he would get better. This time last Friday he got his cough on last Sunday after swimming and its still there. When we took him to the Dr.today she said that he has very very slight wheezing when she examined him because of his cold and recommended Albuterol since that would help his cough and cold. She also suggested " nasonex " . I was wondering if there is anything we can do from ayurved on a preventive measure to stop these issues in my son. Also once its started I would prefer some ayurvedic measures to take care of this, instead of using albuterol I am planning to start the steaming tonight and also doing cleansing of the nose. He drinks only soy milk so there is no dairy which is affecting him with the cold/cough. I just don't want this to develop to a allergy every spring season for him. Please provide me any guidelines if you have any. Thanks Reeja
Guest guest
If you check through the past posts there are several recent recommendations about allergies - spring allergies in particular. Yes, avoiding the inhaler is a good start. Along with the use of a neti and strengthening the immune system through lifestyle choices, local herbal mixes, and local honey! _________________ My son who is 6 1/2 years old gets some cough and cold during the spring season. Guest guest
Dear Reeja It was not only allergic condition which is giving raise to symptoms by which your son was suffering. The seasonal variation will be the same for every child but every child is not suffering from the symptoms as your child. Then there must be some another cause which we should find out first. Please write about his diet esp. intake of milk and milk products per day. Also write about his birth details i.e. time, date and place. Guest guest
Dear Reeja We've been serving the vegan community in our country for years and over those years we notice with many people, taking anything more than around half a cup of soy milk per day for more than 6 weeks they end up with some symptoms: * Breathing congestion and catarrh * Incredible itchiness * Sometimes capiliary damage -- typically on the forearms This doesn't happen with everyone but is common amongst vegetarians and vegans. It's easy to check out -- just remove the soymilk and processed soy products from the diet for a trial period We believe that the main problem is the oil which is included in most commercial soyamilks. In our country there are local providers of soymilk without oil and unsweetened. Alternatives to soymilk are cashew milk and almond milk made freshly at home. In the long run it is so much better to take a food in its natural form -ie no unbound oils at all Hope this helps Kind regards Prema ____________ I am planning to start the steaming tonight and also doing cleansing of the nose. Guest guest
Dear Prema Thank you for the email. I could not get back to you earlier. We are not vegans or vegetarians, but it was good to know the facts about soy milk. I shift my son to soy milk only when he gets a cold or cough since the normal milk (even if boiled with turmeric) seems to still increase his mucus and cold But I shall definitely take your suggestion into consideration. thanks Reeja _____________ We've been serving the vegan community in our country for years and over those years we notice with many people, taking anything more than around half a cup of soy milk per day for more than 6 weeks they end up with some symptoms: * Breathing congestion and catarrh * Incredible itchiness * Sometimes capiliary damage -- typically on the forearms
