Guest guest
Using the local honey has seemed to help many and sometimes local herbalists make a mix that seems effective. Daily use of the neti pot and a healthy diet to boost the immune system are simple ways. Health, Michelle ___________ We live in Eastern USA where the pollen is very high in Spring. Guest guest
Hello Vani In addition to what Michelle suggested, author would like to suggest a simple home remedy, which has been proven to be a good immuno-modulator in his practice. As soon as you get up in the morning, even before brushing teeth, put one clove of garlic in mouth with about half a cup drinking water, and chew the clove. The Garlic juice dissolves in water, drink it and throw out the garlic remains, or swallow them with a little more water. It does not matter if you remove garlic skin or not. In next 20 minutes you finish brushing teeth etc and take half a cup yogurt or 1 cup buttermilk, in which 1/4 tsp turmeric powder is mixed in. Allow another 20-30 minutes before you take tea/coffee/breakfast. Those addicted to tea/coffee without which bowels would not move, they will slowly find that tea/coffee is unnecessary to activate bowels. The suggested routine relives nasal congestion, dripping nose, reduces cough/cold, improves digestive fire, reduces constipation, reduces blood pressure to some extent(if used for many months), and reduces cholesterol also. Bloating will reduce. Some relaxation in piles too. Only one unpleasant side effect. Gas will be eliminated, with sound but no foul smells. You will feel light and calm throughout the day. To gain all these benifits, practice for minimum 2 weeks. If suffering from anxiety, loose motions might occur for 3-4 days initially, which you ignore. All asthma/eczema/psoriasis/diabetes patients of this author follow this routine advantageously. Author finds that the routine helps better management of blood sugar too. If Garlic clove is too thick, cut into half to start with and increase gradually. When yougurt is taken in above manner, the allergy to dairy gets softened. In neti, use sea salt only. In addition, if you can add a tsp of self urine , collected first time in the morning, per cup of saline water, it helps keeping nasal congestion to minimum. Guest guest
Generally, allergies are due to excess of kapha and weakened immune system. The main approach should be 1) Remove ama 2) Reduce kapha 3) Rejuvenate the depleted tissues Many allergies are very intense, for instance allergy to birch pollen and some types of hay, producing terrible itching of the eyes and aggressive sneezing. For these conditions the general remedies are not enough, and one has to take stronger approach. Stop all dairy and wheat for the spring time. Both dairy and wheat increse kapha and produces mucus. Avoid yeast-baked bread. Reduce intake of rice. Instead of wheat and rice, use buckwheat which does not form mucus. Also corn is fine in moderation. Shift away from cereals and grain-based breakfast to vegetable based breakfast. Steamed veggies or veggie soup and dals are fine, as well as scrambled tofu. Lunch can be kitchadi or buckwheat, dal, subji. Or steamed veggies, some beans and buckwheat or millet. You can use safely un-sweetened soymilk during the allergy season. Avoid heavy meals, no icecreams, frozen foods, cold drinks, cold water, canned foods, canned beans, kidney beans. Drink hot water through out the day. You can boil it in the morning and put in thermos flask, and keep with you at work etc. You will notice a big difference after drinking a cup of hot water: the nostrils and sinuses open, the congestion relieves, sneezing subsides. - Neti with salt water every morning, and also in afternoon if required - 1 tsp trikatu churna mixed with 1tsp honey twice-thrice a day to reduce kapha and enkindle the agni - Also sitopaladi churna with honey is helpful. - Anti-allergy tea containing sage, hyssopus officinalis, birch leaf, dandellion, black pepper - thrice a day. Take one rounded teaspoon of the herbs, and boil for 10 minutes. Drink with honey. - Ghee in both nostrils, as recommended by Ajeya. Maharishi nostril oil is even better. - Take vegetable soup as dinner. No heavy dinners, as they tend to increase kapha and cause mucus. - Do regular fasting. One day once a week is good. - Eat consciously, eat lightly, eat little, eat healthy. Pancha karma is an excellent detox and rejuvenation package to be taken before allergy season begins. Ac. Guest guest
Most detailed letters may help vaidyas, but patient may want some simple remedies. Giving most importance to dosha and diets is not practical and to what extent patient will co-operate I don't know. I too don't know home remedies to allergies because the herbs which reduce allergies are known to vaidyas only. Try pancha thitikthaka kashyam all allergies will go Vidhyasagar. __________ Generally, allergies are due to excess of kapha and weakened immune system. Guest guest
Dear Dr Bhate, I was just wondering if it is suitable to take garlic clove/yogurt in the morning, if the pitta is vitiated (acidity)? Will yogurt create congestion for people with low digestive agni? Also yogurt being cold, will it increase vata/kapha or being sour reduce vata/increase pitta? Instead of crushing garlic in mouth, can we crush it, put it in pan with 1 cup water, boil it, cool it and drink it luke warm? Kindly throw some light. Guest guest
The receipes in home remedies are so designed to balance the property of one herb to enhance one dosha, with the property of another ingredient to reduce same dosha, and work harmoniously with the first herb. Sometimes the ingredients are enhancing the resultant benifit. Warm milk after eating ripened banana is one example. Boiling ginger, black pepper, piper longum in milk kills its mucous promoting property. And boiling milk with turmeric helps loosening the dried up mucous in air passages, when suffering from cough, breathing difficulties etc. Adding Indian cow ghee, sea salt enhances this. See how ayurveda presents many paradoxial receipes. Milk incompatible with lemon, but if you take both together, it becomes a pile remedy! In the present case, garlic should not be considered alone. Yogurt with turmeric follows in 20 minutes after garlic. The total effect should be evaluated. 20 minutes gap is deliberate to achieve better results for persons suffering from allergies. One interesting experience you can get is that the yougurt with turmeric powder is a remedy to boost liver function, which boosts digestion, i.e. agni! It will not cause congestion. But one caution. Even home remedies should be evaluated by each individual according to guideline in post#4511. They will never work same for all. Garlic taken raw is best as nothing is lost in volatile parts! But if you wish to take garlic alone, author recommends following way, as proposed by you. Take 2 cups water, boil till 1 cup remains. Remove from fire. Add 1 clove of garlic crushed, and let cool to lukewarm. Squeeze in the juice of a 1/4 lemon and drink warm.Adding lemon optional. This tea is good for cough/colds. Slightly less potent than raw garlic chewed in water. If you see the posts on anxiety panic management, a garlic syrup using sugar base has been suggested as cough/cold remedy in addition to anxiety remedy. Now anxiety is linked to candidiasis and cadidiasis increases with sugar. But garlic in sugar syrup has been used for children, as they dislike taking galic alone. Medicines for children have some compromises in some cases.
