UAE Residents Prone to

'Lesser-known Abdominal Disease'

30 January 2009

DUBAI;- Bad eating and sleeping habits that are partly attributed to traffic

snarls have led to a rise in a lesser-known abdominal disease which is

increasingly affecting the quality of people's lives in the UAE.Doctors

attending the ongoing Arab Health Congress in Dubai have said that

Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) or acid reflux disease has affected more

than a quarter of the adult population and is increasingly seen among children

in the country.

Gastroenterologists have also cautioned that GERD can be the root cause of

infections and pain in many other parts like ear, nose, throat and

chest. " Hundreds of thousands of people who work in Dubai and live in Sharjah are

at risk of developing GERD and related conditions due to bad eating and sleeping

habits. They reach home late, have dinner late and sleep immediately after

dinner. These lifestyle disorders coupled with obesity are major causes of GERD.

The most important factor is that many doctors and patients tend to overlook

this disease and its possibility of causing other diseases, " said Dr Asad Al

Dajani, who presented a paper on " Recognising and Treating Atypical GERD " . In

simpler terms, GERD is a condition in which the acidified liquid contents of the

stomach back up into the esophagus, the food pipe. The common symptoms of GERD

are heartburns, acid regurgitation, vomiting, hoarse voice and dry and

nocturnal cough. In children, it may cause repeated vomiting, spitting and

coughing. Know your digestive system
