Guest guest
Hi I am new to this user group, and this is my first email. I need to discuss my GERD condition with a Ayurvedic doctor or physician to get some information. Currently I have been diagnosed with GERD this August 2008 and am under treatment of PPI and H2 blockers . My condition has definitely improved a lot with lifestyle changes and being on medications in the past 5 months. I am also aware that this condition does not go away in few days and would sometimes takle years to become close to original. I would want to discuss my symptoms in detail so as to find if there is a way to decrease to the current medication and shift to Ayurved Thanks & Regards vmreeja
Guest guest
To decrease the current medication and shift to Ayurveda, you need an Ayurvedic specialists who is also a MD… That way blood test can be run during the transfer… It is the only way to make the shift and keep the body stable at the same time! Guest guest
Dear Dr. Gandhi It took me some time to compile this email: Past History ========== In May 2007 I noticed that I started getting symptoms of vertigo. When I went to my PCP she attributed that to lack of sleep and stress. I had my second child in Sept 2006 and am a full time working mom. She stated few exercises after which those symptoms disappeared. But in June I felt extremely weak in office one day and had sweating and heart palpitations. I went to urgent care and the tests like Holter, everything looked normal. Met my PCP again, she ordered all the blood tests and they came out normal. She stated that I had an anxiety attack and suggested that I need to get more sleep. She was in a way right because in between feeding made me never get enough sleep at night. I was also skipping meals and not eating properly from Feb 2007 due to my schedule. I tried making changes and the symptoms disappeared. I went to India in July for a vacation of 6 weeks and felt quite fine and rested. Once I came back in July the same old schedule started back. In Jan 2008, I developed a cold and infection and needed to be on antibiotics. I suffered for almost 2 weeks before the Doctors put me on antibiotics since they initially thought it was viral infection. I did feel some nausea while having the medication. In Feb, March 2008 etc, I had some cold or other - not sure why since I was quite a healthy person and never get cold/fever normally. In last week of April 2008 I started feeling slight shortness of breath. I have no history of asthma, so my PCP still felt it was an allergy and gave me an inhaler (albuterol). This did not work infact I was on maintenance inhalers too and nothing helped me, my symptoms started becoming more like anxiety attacks and feeling of something travelling up and down and also nausea in the morning and pangs of hunger. I did explain this to my PCP and she dismissed them as my imagination. But she did refer me to an allergist. My allergiest did take allergy tests and it was all normal. I also had cardio tests of stress testing, echocardiogram and holter and all looked good. My blood tests also came out normal, no signs of anemia, cholesterol levels were good, sugar was good. My allergist thought out of the box and realised I might have acid reflux since that also causes all the above mentioned symptoms of shortness, anxiety, sweating etc. He asked me to go Prilosec 20 mg (PPI) once a day, which helped quite a bit. He asked me to make lifestyle changes regular meals, eat by 8 pm and since everything looked better, I stopped the meds within 2 weeks by June 15 as agreed by my allergist. Symptoms ========= Until June end everything seemed ok, but by July 1st week I started worsening. I was maintaining my schedule but I started getting symptoms which could range from high fatigue and the feeling of depression, sweating, feeling of anxiety like symptoms, burping, bloating, knotting in stomach, something stuck in chest feeling, feeling of imbalance or dizziness for few seconds and then release of gas, heart palpitations, something stuck in back, mucus in throat, and shortness of breath came back in August. I used to get bad hunger pangs in middle of night. I never had much heartburn. My reflux started in the night also, with nausea, pangs of hunger, something coming up feeling and it feels like I am floating away. I could not sleep. Other symptoms were also dull abdominal pain in left side stomach and sometimes pain in the junction of esophagus and stomach. I always noticed that my symptoms started getting worse a week closer to my periods. Tests ===== I went to my PCP in July and she diagnosed it again as anxiety attack or lack of iron, I knew that was not the case and finally went to ER. They took serious consideration of the same and ordered an endoscopy. Meanwhile I went through series of tests with my new PCP for MRI scan of brain - which was normal. I did this since I had dizziness and migraines at times. My stool test came normal (they checked for blood), HPylori tests came negative. My endoscopy showed no signs of cancer, ulcer, and hiatus hernia etc. The endoscopy did show some mild chronic inflammation at the junction and they diagnosed my condition as GERD in August 2008. I recently had an abdominal ultrasound and my liver, gallbladder all looked fine. They did find 2 polyp (1 of 1 mm and another of 6mm) in my gallbladder, no gallstones. The Dr. believe that the polyp in my gallbladder is of cholesterol and not of much significance until it increases to more than 1cm. They have anyway ordered a routine ultrasound in another 6 months to check the same. This has nothing to do with my GERD symptoms. Drug regimen I had started with quite a number of drugs but as my symptoms waned have brought it down to a prevacid (30 mg) PPI in the morning and a Zantac150(Ranitidine) at night In Dec 2008 end I did try taking the morning prevacid out but it did not work, my sweating in palms, vertigo started back, so I am back to same dosage. My Dr believes that after some time I can get back to Z150 couple of days in a week just at nighttime, for me that look like a milestone. Present conditions ============== All the symptoms I have mentioned above have considerably reduced in their intensity with the meds I am on currently now and the lifestyle changes I have made. I have noticed that close to my periods my symptoms worsen and flareups occur. My worse timings are in the morning. I do get burps. I still have symptoms 30% of the time in a month, even with the medication, even now I have feeling of air blowing in my nose from inside after I eat a meal or even drink water. Sometimes reflux feelings (knotting, bloating, pain in LES junction, some abdominal pain on left side) come back certain days. In nights the medication Z150 gets me through the night. If I wake up in between I do feel something, and try to sit up and then go to sleep. But it has definitely become better than what the condition was in July 2008. I do get the imbalance feeling still closer to my periods. Lifestyle changes ============= During all this time from July 2008 end I took extreme care of my lifestyle. My food only consisted of roasted vegetables, rice, and yogurt initially. Then I added tofu, chicken (steamed and cooked with no spice), fish (steamed and cooked) and mixed sprouted dhal (moong, black and white channa, black eyed peas, almonds). Slowly I have added moong dhal just in afternoon. Recently from Dec2008 I take milk and eggs. I never eat anything fatty or fried. I never eat anything sour; never dine out, no processed food etc. For spices I only use turmeric powder, meithi (fenugreek) seeds, cumin seeds, sombhu seeds (big cumin), ginger, garlic, sometimes coriander powder, black pepper. My weight was 148 lbs in April 2008 when this started and now it is 133 to 134 lb. I did lose weight drastically initially because of the diet, now it has kind of stabilized little bit. At one point I was still losing weight without doing anything. I do lose weight during my monthly period¢s time and then put it back later after I started eggs. I hope that my weight loss has stabilized since I did not want lose more. I eat around 6 meals, breakfast with milk by 7.30 to 8 am, fruit by 10.30 am, lunch by 12.30 pm, and snack/milk by 4pm, then some fruit at 5.30 to 6 pm and dinner by 7.30 pm (latest). After that at the most I drink only water if needed. I sleep by 11pm and wake up at 6.15 am If I wake up in middle of night before I used to get hunger pangs and after sometime it reduced to nausea, now I still feel weird, so I try to read spiritual book for half hour and then sleep back. Apart from the above health issue I have been normally active, the only other issue is a thyroid nodule in my left thryoid (this was noticed after my first child in 2002) which has been tested and is benign, my thyroid readings are fine and hence they just make me come for a yearly checkup. I do not take any medications for this. I know that it¢s a long list of symptoms and hopefully I am progressing better. But if anyone can help me with the flare-ups which I still keep having and how to control those, it would be helpful. I would also like to know of any diet changes I need to make or lifestyle changes I need to make. My aim is to slowly get to Ayurved medications and I am planning to go to Chennai, India soon for the same. If any of you know are aware of any Ayurved hospitals and good physicians please pass them on to me. Thanks & Regards VM ___________ ....The medication changes as per the entity . Guest guest
When Prana Vata and Vyana vata become unbalanced, they disturb digestive agni, endocrine system, cause weight loss, vomits etc Your full history lists too many activities and tensions from the job, family, baby, several medications and investigations carried out without reaching firm conclusions. " Guess and eliminate the possibilities " , is the technique allopathy follows, but it meets dead end many a time. Stress induced hormones can be found in the blood work, but they do not have proper medication to relive the patient from stress, lifestyle driven disorders. Though author would not say you are suffering from anxity, he knows that a long term allopathci medication, when it plays with nervous sytem, anxiety like symptoms emerge. Following post recommends how to taper off allopathy: ayurveda/message/13792 Many patients find that they achieve vata balance when they spend time in native place. Those who have spend much of their life in coastal places, they are vulnerable to auto-immune and vata driven diseases. If you decide to visit homeland, it will be a good decision.
