Guest guest
hello friends. today iam asking for advice concerning my dear father in law. i got a call from my mother-in-law telling me that daddy had to go to the doctor because he got a very severe headache.the pain started in part of his gum and shot straight up into the top of his head. there is no swelling or redness on the gum,nor is it painful to touch.there is no tooth in that area either. it was removed years and years ago. i am very afraid for my dad, he is 70 years old, has high blood pressure, high cholestrol, brain damage from a accident over 40 years ago. recent MRI'S show cholestorl in his head, very high. his doctor told him to go to a dentist and sent him home. i do not agree with this. the doctor said if there is any more pain he must come back right away. well almost a hour after his visit the pain came back to the point where he cannot do anything. he went back to the doctor after i gently''nagged him'' to go. all the doctor did was give him antibiotics. now i am no doctor but in my heart i know this is very wrong,to me it sounds like a stroke is coming on,and i am hoping for your advice today on his situation. his diet consists of oatmeal, rice, bulgher, kidney beans, coconut milk, fish and sometimes chicken. he doesnt use salt at all and does eat fruits and veggies. he also eat bread fruit, green bananas, ackees. he lives in jamaica and hardly eats processed foods at all. he lives very natural food wise. does not smoke or drink either. i am very scared for my father, does anyone know of a ayurvedic doctor practising in jamaica or can give some advice. oh and he also takes garlic and lots of fibre. thank you for all your help. Guest guest
Please ask him if pain increases after taking sweet food/tea. Or after salt is applied to the gum. Does pain comes in waves, or is continuous. Is it there all the time or occurs randomly. Till the time some clear guess is formed, you ask him to take a glass of warm water in which some ginger is boiled for 5 minutes and lemon juice is squeezed in. Also prick a peeled garlic clove at many places on it and apply to the gum where pain originates. He should hold it there by applying pressure with cheek. Alternately, if you have clove oil/grape seed oil, apply to the gum with index finger. Massaging the gum with finger, applying ice cube tied in a cloth may also be tried. Guest guest
If the pain is due to the tooth ache , then take clove oil . Put 2 drops of it in little cotton . & put that cotton at the pain site near the tooth by gentle pressure from the cheek applied from the outside . Put this cotton for 15 - 20 min . U can do this 2 times a day preferably after taking the meal . Avoid chilled food or chilled water intake if he have this .Oil pulling may also help . __________ he got a very severe headache.the pain started in part of his gum and shot straight up into the top of his head. there is no swelling or redness on the gum,nor is it painful to touch.there is no tooth in that area either. it was removed years and years ago. Guest guest
sweets or teas do not effect his pain, nor seem to cause. salt on the gum does not help or cause pain.i suggested he gargle with salt water. the pain seems to be randomly occuring out of the blue, when the pain comes on it is continous pain until it just stops.it lasts approx 2-3 hrs when it happens. when the pain is in his head, he constantly has to urinate, about 5-6- 7 times in those 2 hours.he does have some kind of prostrate problem. i dont know exactly what it is. also when the pain comes on he cannot talk,he has to write everything down, because when he talks it makes the pain even worse. also the pain comes on any time whether he is resting or even just sweeping in the yard. i told mama about the cloves, lemon and ginger. and i am eagerly awaiting your reply. Guest guest
Thanks for writing in detail about his urination and speech loss. That is stroke, you guessed right. everyone should be expert in recognizing the stroke so that help can be given in time. Please see: ayurveda/message/6212 Where it is clearly stated that loss of speech capability is " Stroke " . Fortunately for him, the stroke is not intense. The root cause can be easily located to his anti-hypertensive ot statin medications for high cholesterol; pl see: ayurveda/message/10018 Now anti-hypertensives (Beta blocker or Calcium channel blockers) cant be stopped immediately. They have to be gradually tapered off, after clearing their residues in liver. This needs liver detox treatment ranging from 1 to 3 detoxes of eight day each, with a gap of one week in between, taking total 5 weeks. This will solve his prostate problem too. Since you are remotely located, such a treatment may not be possible for you. Hence author suggests some home remedies here, which will give some relief. Only that much can be done remotely. Other than anti-hypertensives and statins, there could be problem in vein carrying blood to brain, intermittent bleeding from blood carrying vein, tumor in brain, injury in spinal cord, pressure on nerves system. His accident 40 years ago, may have left some scars, which may be now becoming active with medication. An expert vaidya can tell you the cause without referring the patient to any diagnsotic lab. Home remedies: 1. Eat Medu-vada made from black gram (Udad dal) or massage with walnut oil. To know what is Medu-vada, find nearest South indian neighbour. How much should be eaten would vary with his digestion, which oil you use to fry vada etc. 2. Boil jawar(a cereal grain, may be awailable in Indian stores, especially in NJ, grind it, mix castor oil, apply its warm paste on head, tie cotton clth over it and let it ferment. Remove after2-3 days. Apply fresh paste after cleaning. If he does not lije smell, the paste can be changed everyday. 3. Massage face and chest with dry ginger powder. 4. Mix castor oil in dry ginger powder (1/2 tsp thrice a day) and lick it. 5. Easiest home remedy is to massage face and chest with with 4 days old self urine, collected early morning as soon as he gets up. 6. Mix black pepper powder in sesame or mustard oil and massage body with that. 7. Add water to honey or old jaggery in double proportion, boil it till total liquid remains to 1/3 and drink this whenever feel thirsty. 8. Mix 2 tsp. honey in ½ cup warm water and drink; immediately after, drink mixed juice of apple, grapes and green pear. There are many more herbal remedies, thanks to the gurus from tribal regions, but most of the herbs will be difficult for you to get, and should be recommended only after dosha assessment of the person. As suggested by Dr Vidhyasagar, even accupuncture would help. When he gets the stroke again, prick centre of all ten finger tips of hands with a fine needle and let a drop of blood come. This will give him some relief. even pressing finger-tip and giving accupressure will also help, but stronger treatment is pricking by a needle. Keep the needle handy for such an occasion. Also learn how much pressure is necessary to get just one drop of blood. Easier way would be to use lancet available with most glucometers. The lancet has a needle which can strike with adjustable force. If you search the archives for posts having " stroke " as the subject, you will find that fastest recovery from stroke possibility is mentioned from panchgavya medicines, available in most of India. This is one area where allopathy creates patients and uropathy cures them. Guest guest
Interesting collection of home remedies, Dr.Bhate. Could you clarify whether they are liver detoxes or anti-hypertensives? Guest guest
the medical system in jamaica is a shame and it is very hard to find a good doctor over there, often times as in other countries it is only the rich that get good health care there, while the poor, and elderly get ignored. i could tell you a horror story about a women with breast cancer.and while i realise how hard cancer is to heal, but the mistreatment was awful. please dont misunderstand me as iam not trying to be disrespectful to you, but my husband is from jamaica and knows the health system there. daddy has alot of health problems, and i take his health and well being very seriously , and this doctor is not taking his complaints seriously. i do know some people get frightened very easy and run to doc's for every little thing, but daddy has never complained of pain before, he is very strong, for him to complain means its serious. what can i say, i am a lioness when it comes to protecting my family . _________________ Patients fears, and real disease are different many times. Guest guest
One should not assume that home remedies are equivalent to the treatment (under supervision) proposed to take care of chronic problem. Also, if modern science feels that stroke is caused by hypertension, why ayurveda practitioner borrow their understanding to arrive at herbal solutions? Most of the home remedies proposed for reducing stroke possibility aimed at balancing vata and a little pitta, and remedy#8 helps detoxification to some extent. Home remedies generally have mild force, are not supposed to aggravate the situation, and by chance if someone has negative experience, he has enough time to stop the remedy. Vaidya needs to warn the patient to go through self pulse test described in post# 4511, that is all. Dr Bhate _________ Interesting collection of home remedies, Dr.Bhate.
