Guest guest
I would go with sesame oil… Once the swelling is down from sitting a while, it would be good if he could get into a walking routine… I know that's a hard think to do, after working all day, but it will payoff big time down the road… Noel

Guest guest
I am a 55 yr old woman and I have food swelling problem after the long plane trip to India. This last year I had the worse ever after 40 hours of continual travel on a bad connection (no surprise it happened). I did bed rest for about a week. No change. I was referred to kidney hospital and had tests including two ultrasounds to rule out a blood clot. All tests normal. More bed rest to no avail. Finally I went to a local Ayurvedic clinic in a village in Karnataka. The doctor there was trained in Calicut. His medicines and massage regimen had me better in four days. He tightly taped my ankles each day between visits after applying a salve he cooked up. I also had to take a number of medicines for water balance and kidney support. I recommend that your dad go the ayurvedic route. ____________ he is in banking job from thirty one years n its a sitting job for long hours n when cuming back he has to wait for half hr or sometime even 1 n half hour ,i have noticed swelling (slight ) on his feet on the opp side of ankle,it has been few days that i have noticed ,after the night sleep it gets better, so i just wanted to know if there is anything that could be done or is it something serious
Guest guest
There are various querries regarding feet or leg swellings in past and this week too. There have been good suggestions and experience reported also. Author would like to draw attention to a general ayurvedic perspective on swellings, which lists some of the common medicines used along with home remedies, posted at: ayurveda/message/3542 The poultice mentioned in message#15260 is also discussed with its contents in above post. Vaidyas in villages know many herbal poultices which give rapid relief from such problems. One vaidya in a village gave this author a ghrutam for local application, made especially for bone fractures. Author has seen amazing results for ftractures in difficult areas where plasters are difficult to make, e.g. sacral part of spine, shoulder blade area, neck area etc. The swellings described in message15240# and #15260 are due to old age as opined by Dr Vidyasagar in post#15246. Howver, old age is a disease everyone gets one day or other. Reduced blood circulation with advancing age, a problem caused by Vata seems better description. Allopaths call it congestive heart failure/atherosclerosis, meaning reduced ejection from heart/circulation reduction due to added resistance from arteries. Liver, pancreas, kidney slow down as a result and general swelling occurs. hindarm becomes vers soft, for vaidya to notice. Though swellings have been dealt with in post# 3542 earlier, the purpose of this post is to mention more appropriate medicines for this old age swelling in ankle region, as a result of tired heart/reduced circulation. This swelling is maximum near ankle, and gradually reduces upwards towards the knee. The vaidyas measure the swelling magnitude by their own instant result inexpensive techniques. The medicine course for these swelling streches to 6-8 months though rapid relief by using local poultice, massage can be obtained in a week itself. Medicines are taken to rejuivinate liver, kidney pancreas etc. Punarnavasava or punarnava quath, Arjunarishtam, Chandraprabha Vati or Shilajit Rasayana, Lohasava are some common formulations to address these swellings. Local application of Vata reducing medicated oils, light massage if patient can come to vaidya frequently are the choices, but vaidya chooses them most appropriate to the patient. If it is seen that liver also needs some support, a combination of Aaroyavardhini and Punarnava mandur alone is adequate, as it affects both liver and kidney. Punarnava is not just a herb for kidney. It acts on liver too. Swellings in ankle region for menstruating women are not to be confused with those driven by old age, causing reduced ejection from heart. These are often traced to reduced hormones, which happens during pregnancy/peri-menopause, poly-cystic ovaries etc. In one of his posts, author mentioned men think by head, women by heart. It is surprising, how women heart slows down when their hormones reduce. While allopaths will do USG, ECG etc to rule out well known diseases caused by clotting, DVT, Cancer etc(Post#15260), Vaidya will decide the root cause by pulse and marma diganosis. A 15 year old girl used to experience swellings above jawbone, just a day or two before her Menses start and it used be gone by the end of cycle. USG ruled out clotting. An allopath then prescribed antibiotics to clear UTI suspicion; but patient was not willing to take. The pulse was indicating weakend apana vata force, diverting to menstrual cycle, and weakening the urinary system function. Lemon water thrice a day for one week solved the problem without any formulation!! Do not self diagnose and better consult a vaidya when diagnosis using symptoms alone becomes a puzzle. Guest guest
You can do some simple yoga exercises like shoulderstand and plough poses. If you cannot do those, just lay on your back close to a wall and raise your legs straight up against the wall. In other words, keep the legs elevated above the head as much as possible. Guest guest
Did the yoga, did the bed rest with pillows, still after two weeks I had almost no change in the swelling. The ayurveda worked. Two other tings I should mention: my post travel swelling does go away quickly if I am in a cold climate (my home is in upstate NY so we are always cool at least at night even at height of summer) and I have had serious injuries to both ankles (different injuries at different times) so I have scar tissue both ankles. Thanks for the concern. _________________ You can do some simple yoga exercises like shoulderstand and plough poses.
