Our 14 month daughter wakes up in the night crying out loudly every 1.5 hours.

One of our friends suggested we giver her warm milk with a pinch of nutmeg

powder. She seems to get undisturbed sleep ever since we used nutmeg.

1. Can nutmeg be given to children under 2 years ?

2. If yes to above does it have any adverse effect when used on a long term

basis ?

3. Any alternatives to above method for inducing sleep for infants ?

Thanks,

Pradeep

In Kerala they give nutmeg along with 8 other things to a baby after 28 days. So

it is not wrong to give that but be careful of the quantity you give If it is

helping her its good.

nutmeg could be given to children

it slightly slows down peristalsis and cause constipation.

if there is no such problem you can use it.

in case  to relive constipation  harithagi  is best choice.

Nutmeg is considered Madkaraka dravya and good for short term use. If you want

to prolong its use try it along with almond, saffron and honey. Since nutmeg

contains essential oil, terpene derivatives and phenylpropanoids

(myristicin, elemicin, safrol, eugenol and eugenol). Of the latter group,

myristicin (methoxy-safrole, typically 4%) is responsible for the

hallucinogenic effect of nutmeg. But the Nutmeg is only weakly hallucinogenic;

The large

dosage may give rise to very unpleasant side-effects caused by other

components of nutmeg, which include prolonged extreme nausea and long-term

hypersensitivity to nutmeg. The hallucinogenic phenylpropanoids themselves

are hepatotoxins and far from harmless for frequent users.
