Ayurveda provides the detailed description for the problem of Piles. It is

called as Arsha. Specifically Gudagat Arsha ( Anal Piles. As described in

Ayurveda, any Pile like growth anywhere in the body is called as Arsha ).

Aetiology : -

The basic reason for the Piles is the Straining at the time of defeacation due

to disturbed digestion. In any sense, if you get the problem of Piles, either

Internal Piles or External Piles, the reason remains disturbed digestion. It is

specifically told that Agnimandya ( Anorexia ) is the basic reason for the

formation of Piles. It starts with this basic reason and gradually leads to full

fledged Piles in the due course of the progress of the disease. Eating dry food

items like bread, bajra, more amount of lentils ( except Moong), less amount of

drinking water in the the 24 hours of the Daytime, excessive coffee intake, late

night dinner & immidiate sleep etc are some of the reasons for it. In rare

cases, during pregnancy, cases of Piles formation are reported too.

Types : -

Based on the imbalances of the Doshas , Piles are of 2 types. 1) Dry Itchy

Piles. 2) Leaky and Bleeding Piles.

Common Signs and Symptoms : -

As per the types and the Doshas involved, the Dry form is the result of mostly

Kapha Dosha and the Leaky form is the result of mostly Pitta Dosha. As per the

percentage of the other doshas involved in it, there may be Pain at the anus or

the region surrounding the anus and anal canal.

Due to Pitta dosha, there is Burning sensation at the anal region, mostly at

the time of defeacation and after it for some time. Many times there is

bleeding before the defeacation or after the defeacation. In extreme cases there

is a fountain of blood during the defeacation.

In the Kaphaj type, the most prominent symptom is the Itching at the anal

region  with swelling too.

In the Pittaj type, there is always burning sensation at the anus. Some

times, the burning is so severe that the person cant sit properly continuously

for a few minutes.

Also there is pain sensation after the defeacation and during the

defeacation.

Treatment : -

In Ayurveda, the treatment is derived in the 4 steps as follows.

A ) Aushadh : -

The medicines, which can decrease the Pain, Burning, Itching to be taken orally

as per the body type ( Prakriti ).

It includes

Surana ( Amorphophyllus campanulatus ) ,

Patha ( Cocculus Hirsutus ) ,

Nagkesar ( Musua ferrea ) etc.

These are some names of the herbs, with which this treatment can be done. But

always keep in the mind that, the treatment of the Kaphaj and Pittaj type is

opposite. So take the medication from the Ayurveda practitioner as per the

diagnosis. Do not try to take it on your own.

B ) Shastra : -

In this, the Pile tag is cut with a sharp blade from its root.

C ) Kshar : -

In this, a Kshar ( Alkali ) is applied on the tags of the piles at the base, so

that, they cut on their own. It is often done with a special Thread applied with

the Kshar. We know it as Ksharsutra .

D ) Agni : -

In this, the Pile tag is burned with a Shalaka ( rod made of special metals).

Just like the cauterisation.

The Sitz Bath is also the temporary relief giving treatment. A person have to

sit in the water in such a way that, the water should be upto his waist region

covering his anal region. This is often done by lukewarm water.

There are many methods to treat the Piles as we see. But the basic reason of

straining at the time of defeacation, if kept untreated, the problem of piles

will reappear for sure. So always to be kept in the mind that, in treating the

Piles, there should not be straining at the time of defeacation.

Diet plays the vital role in treating the piles too. The diet should have Fibre

content & adequate amount of water intake ( Hydration ) is necessary too. Waking

up early in the morning helps to decrease the problem. At bed time, raisins help

a lot.
