vegetarian and non vegetarian foods

Hello,

According to allopathy some nutrients are essential to human

health and has to be obtained from food that we eat. These include

many vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, aminoacids etc., Among these

nutrients some can be obtained only from animal foods (for example

vitamin B12, omega-3 fatty acids etc.,). I understand Ayurveda is not

against eating nonvegetarian foods. At the sametime it does not say

eating nonvgetarian foods is absolutely necessary for human health,

nor does it say that vegetarians cannot have optimum health. We do

know that many saints in ancient times ate only fruits and vegetables

and remained perfectly healthy. Where did they get their vit B12 and

omega 3 fatty acids and other nutrietns that can be obtained only from

animal foods? Are there any vegetarian food sources or ayurvedic

remedies that provided them these nutrients?

Obviously, the only animal source for obtaining essential nutrients was milk and

its product-linage like curd, buttermilk, butter and clarified butter (Ghee)

from cow, buffalo, goat in general. Ayurveda has also mentioned five more

animals like camel, donkey, elephant etc for milking. This workout would

compensate for essential factors not available from vegetable sources. This was

/ is also religiously accepted due to its application of Ahimsa principle and

also useful to those who were averse to meats due to their disagreeable smell.

The saints used this strategy to supplement their fruit and vegetable diet.
