Guest guest
Hi, I would like to know if we can take banana with warm milk for breakfast or after dinner? On searching on the net, I found differing views: The following website recommends banana + warm milk http://www.ayurhelp.com/articles/Ayurveda_Health_tips.htm The following documents prohibits strongly http://www.ayurveda.com/online resource/food_combining.pdf Can the knowledgable member throw light upon this contradiction? Can we add suger for better taste? add suger + cardamom powder for better digestion? add ginger powder? A pinch of it? It is suitable for people of which prakriti? Guest guest
Banana followed by warm milk aids sleep and bowel movements. Taking at breakfast as well as bedtime is OK, if you do not take excess quantity and are not suffering from " Kapha dominance " . For Kapha dominant people the combination may diminish agni and cause allergies. (Message 5940) This suits Pitta dominated people also (Message# 11023) Vata(major), Pitta(Minor) Vikruti people respond well to Banana followed by warm milk.(Message#11796) The combination is incompatible diet if Banana is not fully ripened, sweet. Take warm milk after eating Banana. If both combined into a shake, it should be consumed immediately. Observe what happens to milk if you add Banana slices to milk and keep them for say 1 hour. The Banana should have been allowed to ripen on tree itself. The variety which is ripened artificially has less sugar content and sometimes taste is sour too. Such fruit will cause allergies. Milk should not be taken after such fruit. Adding Sugar (crystal sugar only) and Cardamom will enhance pitta pacifier property of the milk. It will be a better " sleep aid " in that case. Even a pinch of nutmeg can be added. Mucous causing tendency of milk can be reduced by adding ginger powder or black pepper powder. Boiling milk with these powders for few minutes is recommended in that case. Even Vidanga can be boiled in the milk to achieve this purpose. Underweight children can be given this milk, so that growth of worms does not occur. Instead of crystal sugar, honey can be added just before drinking warm milk. See that milk temperature is not very high, just lukewarm. Lastly, the suitability of Banana+milk for an individual can be assessed by him by tests recommended in Message 4511. Banana exhibits an exceptional behaviour. Reduces constipation but will reduce motions if suffering from diarrhea! Guest guest
dear vibhuti, There are no absolute contra-indications for any food-items in Ayurveda, as far as my reading goes.Everything depends on compatability, suitability and habituality. Banana and milk are both Kapha promoting substances. So, a combination of these items can increase Kapha in susceptible persons. It is better to avoid this combination after dinner for fear of increasing Kapha. However, persons suffering fron constipation should definitely use this combination, if they are not of Kapha Prakruti/constitution. Sugar makes this combination very sticky, hence any use of sugar should be sparing. Anyway, banana and milk are both sweet in their own capacity and savouring their natural sweetness is a more pleasant experience. Cardamom does enhance the flavour of this combination. I have not heard of ginger being added to such combination. Warm milk is generally avoided because reaction with fruit ingredients(phyto-chemicals) can break/coagulate the milk, disturbing the taste/texture and edibility of the cuisine. So cold/room-temperature milk is preferred. This combination is suitable for persons having Vata, Pitta or mixed Vata-Pitta Prakruti. This combination should be avoided in diabetes and obesity. Guest guest
I had a flood in my basement and had to clear everything out, and while doing so I went through my stuff and found an interesting book called perfect health by Deepak Chopra and I discovered I am a perfect vata with a bit of pitta in the upper numbers. He lists a bunch of food appropriate but I would like to know if there any one out there that deals with nutrition on the whole and can either recommend a book of recipes for a vatta pitta type or offer suggestions, my appetite is still a bit sluggish early in the morning. I have to rise at 4:00am and am far from hungry, though I would love to force myself to eat, but I just cannot do it with out feeling ill. Can anyone offer suggestions on a daily diet to pacify me? If so thank you. Bonnie
