Guest guest
Ah! This is great; a group for Ayurveda. I've been looking for something like this for quite a while. I was wondering if you all could help me w/ a couple of quick questions: 1) Does anyone know if there are any case studies about Ayurveda and Parkinson's? Unfortunately my dad has the disease, and I'm trying to figure out if there are " alternative " treatments out there. 2) On a side note, I'm thinking of starting a web-based service for folks based around the idea of maintaining one's brain health through a variety of lifestyle changes (such as Ayurveda), and I would love your feedback. The survey should only take a few minutes. Thanks in advance! http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=LDKviG4e9My0fBtsJ1ewQw_3d_3d I look forward to hearing from you! Guest guest
Yes, there are many cases of Parkinson's cured by Yoga, Pranayam and Ayurveda as recorded by Swami Ramdevji. You can read all about such cases with names and addresses in the book on " yog in synergy with medical science " . The book is available at Patanjali Chikitsalaya outlets in various cities and towns in India. Guest guest
Dear Friend, Controlled and supervised administration of Mucuna Pruriens (containing L-Dopa) may be of interest as an alternative treatment of your dad. You know our body uses the naturally-occurring compound L-Dopa to produce an important brain chemical known as dopamine, which is an instrumental factor in determining movement, mood and sexuality. When the brain lacks enough dopamine, Parkinson’s disease results. Primarily characterized by a slowness in the initiation and execution of movement, this syndrome is also marked by motor stiffness and easy fatigability as well as mental disturbances including slowed thinking, mild dementia, and depression. Dopamine itself isn’t useful in treatment because it’s too large a compound to cross the blood-brain barrier. Its precursor, L-Dopa, though is small enough to pass through this membranous barrier unimpeded.    With its high concentration of L-Dopa, Mucuna has been used for generations in India to treat Parkinson's disease. What’s most interesting about the Mucuna bean is that the other substances that it contains may well potentate the delivery of L-Dopa and make it even more effective than when using it by itself, as researcher have already demonstrated in animal experimentation. In a a randomized, controlled, double blind crossover trial published on Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery, Psychiatry, the clinical effects of levodopa L-dopa/carbidopa (LD/CD) are compared with two different doses of mucuna preparation. Eight Parkinson's disease patients were given with single doses of 200/50 mg LD/CD, or 15 and 30 g of mucuna preparation in randomised order. Compared with standard LD/CD, the 30 g mucuna preparation led to a considerably faster onset of effect (34.6 v 68.5 min; p = 0.021), Mean on time was 21.9% (37 min) longer, peak L-dopa plasma concentrations were 110% higher and the area under the plasma concentration v time curve (area under curve) was 165.3% larger (p = 0.012). The rapid onset of action and longer on time without concomitant increase in dyskinesias on mucuna seed powder formulation suggest that this natural source of L-dopa might possess advantages over conventional L-dopa preparations in the long term management of PD. There are not enough case studies on Mucuna nevertheless clinical scientists in Western countries are beginning to seriously take a look at the potential benefits of mucuna pruriens herb in a number of conditions including Parkinson's disease. Beside Mucuna some ayurvedic metalic preparations especially Makar Sanjivani (containing processed mercury and gold) along with Panch Karma support is fount useful by theauthor in the long term alternative management of Pakinson’s disease in elderly patients.
