Guest guest
All respected Vaidyas, Would someone tell me how to make a cream from herbal powder? What ingredients to mix? It should also last long. My friend gave me powder for pimples. It is bit thick like semolina (Suji), difficult to apply. I would be grateful if you kindly advise me. Guest guest
Dear Vrushali, For making a cream, there have to be an oil and a water phase, which, under standard conditions result in the formation of cream. unfortunately, we cant get a cream with powder as a raw material. Even if we mix it in cream base, the rough feeling won't go altogether. However you can always make a paste of it by grinding it with little quantity of water of gulabjal. You have to select the appropriate one, based on what ur condition is and what the ingredients are. Dr. Sanjay Sharma ________________ Would someone tell me how to make a cream from herbal powder? Guest guest
Namaste: Easiest way to make a cream from an herbal powder is: 1. Grind the powder further to a finer mesh size (use coffee grinder). Sift it through a strainer or a cloth. 2. Mix it with Vaseline intensive care lotion. (Where, cream suspension system is already perfected.) 3. OR After making the fine powder mix it with milk cream (little bit at a time). You may add Rose water to mask the typical herbal odor. Good luck, Dr. Yadu ________ Would someone tell me how to make a cream from herbal powder? What ingredients to mix? It should also last long. Guest guest
Namaskar, Thanks Dr.Yadu for your valued advise. I will grind it further to reduce coarseness. I would prefer rose water which will last longer, whereas with milk cream it will spoil soon. Regards _____________________________ 1. Guest guest
Dr. Yadu Can we also use a combination of oil like olive oil and beeswax instead of Vaseline, which is petroleum based? Guest guest
Here in Australia there are many petro-chemical free creams available at Naturopathic Suppliers which are suitable for carrying oils and herbs used by practitioners - we wouldn't dream of using anything with undesirable chemicals in them - and if we need to increase the preservative quality of the resulting mix we would use Vitamin E as a preservative or Grapefruit seed extract. The worst chemical commonly used in many creams these days is propylene Glycol in addition to the petro-chemicals - certainly Vaseline products would not be considered appropriate. However if you see on the list of ingredients on any commercial product that there is nothing undesirable then any commercial cream could be used. This is the recipe we were given in a Herbal Preparations course I attended: 250 ml Almond Oil 25 gm beeswax 20 gm emulsifying wax 1,000 iu Vit E 3 - 5 drops citrus seed extract we were making Calendula and Comfrey cream and to this we added 4 cups of fresh herb, chopped and also 50 mL rose water. Method: Macerate and heat oil until herbs are reduced ( about 2 hours) and strain through filter paper and strainer, add beeswax and emulsifying wax until combined over low heat. Cool in water bath and add remaining ingredients. As the cream thickens pour into sterile jars. I imagine you could use the same proportions but add the herbal powders if you wanted to make the cream yourself from scratch In the USA Jeanne Rose's Herbal Body Book is full of wonderful recipes.
