Guest guest
Namaste Its been a while since I posted on this forum I'm an ayurvedic-enthusiast and enjoy applying the principles of Ayurveda into my my life. However I want to take a cautious approach when doing so as I don't access to a qualified Ayurvedic physcian/Vaidya in my area. Dr. Vasanth Lad who is a reputed Ayurvedic doctor living and practising in USA has mentioned techniques on Self-adminstering Basti I was going through the material on his website http://www.ayurveda.com/online%20resource/basti_colon_cleansing.pdf I don't have any of the contraindications mentioned in the article but often get constipated. Only if I include 2-3 servings of fruits and vegetables in my diet my bowel movements are normal. The stools are usually sticky. So is it okay if I go ahead and self adminster basti ? If so what are the herbs needed for Basti ? Even when I'm constipated I feel hungry as usual and unable to fast as suggested by some people here. I'm in my mid 30s with a deskjob involving computer and do not do much physical activity. Thanks and regards, Janardan
Guest guest
While it is quite possible to self administer Basti I would not recommended it without the proper advice from a Vidya. >From the little you have said it seems you are living quite a sedentary lifestyle which may well be one of the prime causes for your constipation. My suggestion would be to make sure you get 45 minutes of walk in daily and in the morning, as soon as you get up have a glass of warm water. After several days you should see things flowing okay. It does sound like you have some toxicity you need to clear out which can be done with some herbs added to your food and perhaps a good look at your diet. Is there anyone you can see a Vidya in your area at all? Kind regards John

It could be a first noticeable symptom of many chronic diseases, including Diabetes. The reason for your constipation is spelt out in your post itself. Sticky stools represent ama, the toxins. How many toxins one basti is going to eliminate? Better look at your lifestyle. Adopt yoga, morning walk, pranayama, veggetable soups (which restore your electolyte balance and minerals), avoid vata vitiating foods (files in group website tell what are they) and reduce sedentary routines. A tsp of Trifla or avipattikar churna, taken for 3-4 months can strengthen the colon moving force. This is stated here since you are constipated often, not everyday. Basti is the " Brahmastra " , to be used only when absolutely necessary. A 6 year old girl used to pass motion only once a week. With Abhayarishtam, 1 tsp after meals for 3 months, she now passes stools everyday. The loss of colon elasticity is by food lacking in fibres and resultant more work by colon. and one should simplify diet, rather than going for extreme measures such as basti. Indian cow ghee, 1-3 tsp in warm milk at bedtime is the diet " pleasing " to the colon.
Guest guest
Thank you Shirish-ji for clearing my doubts. I will start using Triphala and try to modify my lifestyle. Since I dont live in India presently I only have access to Jersey cow's milk. But we do get Indian ghee here like Amul etc. I have a general question In US and in other so called developed countries , its common for people to take multivitamin tablets/mineral supplements everyday although I've never ever consumed these supplements. Vitamin stores are plenty and you would find almost every vegetable/fruit in a capsule form ! The fruits and vegetables you get here go through a lot of " processing " before they are delivered to the grocery store and organic produce is not very affordable. They say the produce you get in US has very less nutritive content and more of chemical content! So this being the case should one resort to multivitamin chemical tablet for overall nourishment ? I know multivitamin is very artificial man made type of a thing. But is something better than nothing in this case ? Thanks again, Janardan
Guest guest
Dear Dr.Bhate, I've been strictly following your advise on using Trifala and Warm milk with Ghee during bedtime for about 4 weeks and the results have been very positive. I have never missed a bowel movement ever since I followed the advise. Moreover to my pleasant surprise my cracked feet healed completely and I no longer have severe dandruff like I used to. I don't know how these problems are all related in terms of the humors but I'm very happy with my progress. How long should I continue using Trifala and warm milk with Ghee ? You mentioned vegetable soups as one of the remedies. Can vegetable Sambhar be considered as a soup ? We don't heavily spice the Sambhar we make. Thanks a lot for your help. Trifla contains two rasayana herbs and ghee is the most powerful rasayana. If you are not allergic to milk, continue the receipe lifetime and enjoy 100th birthday with great grand children. Trifla is not addictive. > You mentioned vegetable soups as one of the remedies. Can vegetable > Sambhar be considered as a soup ? We don't heavily spice the sambhar Yes. It is a soup with spices. it acts as an appetiser, digestive aid and balances the carb/protein ratio. the minerals from the vegetables used help Bowel movements. The custom of eating rice+sambar first, rice+rasam later and finishing the meal with curd+rice+lime pickle has come with deep thought over the food's action in the body and takes care of many of the misconceptions about rice dominant south indian food by ayurvedists who believe modern science. The garlic, coconut, tamarind, pepper used in the samabar and rasam, plus the probiotics+lemon pickle in curd (plus ginger, chillies, coriander garnish) all ensure good digestion, less ama etc. Indian cooking is the combination of cooking art with ayurvedic philosophy of combining herbs with food items.
