Guest guest
The important point in these types of diet is that starchy carbohydrates must be drastically reduced. So all starchy foods like grains, potatoes, etc. should be reduced as much as possible. I do not agree with the very high fat and protein recommendations given by some, just cutting out starches can be very helpful. Eat good fats including virgin coconut oil. So a diet of very low starch fruits, grains, and vegetables, with animal proteins, and ghee and coconut oil will tend the metaboism toward a fat for energy mode. If the patient is a child then the effect can easily be achieved in short time. Be careful about proteins so as to avoid ketosis. Give plenty of low starch vegetables, children will often eat vegetables better as blended soups with milk, ghee, or cream, also mashing or pureeing with ghee or coconut oil. Children often accept vegetables better if there is a little sour taste so adding a tomato or some citrus juice with oils can cut the bitterness they are often sensetive to, also giving creamy taste helps, sometime adding apple or pear can balance the taste for children. Fine chopped salads with mixed fruits (fresh or dried)and vegetables with nuts and creamy dressings are often acceptable to children. Good salad for children is chopped apple, celery, walnuts, fine chopped lettuce, lightly softened raisins with a creamy dressing. In epilepsy these diets are very effective, they were originally developed for these cases. This way of thinking is very popular in modern society in the west. It is the concept of Dr. Mercola, Dr, Rosedale, etc., these people advocate such diets to correct many conditions. These diets remove or very much reduce grains so that the body will start burning fats for energy instead of carbohydrates. Which the advocates of such diets believe is the natural way for us to get our energy needs, from fats. Of course the fats must be of high quality. Dr. Mercola's book is 'The No Grain Diet'.
