Guest guest
Dear Mandakini, It is a good query. I do use sufficient quantities of bhasmas -independantly or in combination with other herbs, since last 18 years. I have yet to counter a case with adverse reactions. If prepared according to shastra, the bhasmas do not exhibit toxic effects. But, a word of caution here is necessary. Bhasmas should be used as per the indications and as per the prescribed dose which are very minute. Use of bhasmas subsequent to improper diagnosis, improper evaluation of patient's prakruti and saatmya can cause trouble to patient. Hence proper study and understanding of bhasmas is necessary before we put them to use. Side-effects are occuring because the bhasmas are easily available over-the -counter without prescription, people try to self-treat themselves after reading some literature in print media or from some friend's recommendation. Many times it has been observed by me at our association level that people do short-term courses of Ayurveda and/or alternative medicines and start considering themselves as full-fledged doctors/vaidyas. If such people experiment in bhasma therapy, then there are chances that blunders can occur. Judicious use is advisable, whether it is bhasma or antibiotic. Do you use bhasma and have you seen side effects? Also, do you know whether the metals are still toxic if prepared according to shastra? Guest guest
Dear I would definitely like to point out that Panchkarma is being extensively practised in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan also besides Kerala.AND there is nothing much difference from Kerala variety except language and names of procedures and herbs. All basic Ayurveda is the same in principles and practice. The only difference is in the hype created about Kerala due to aggressive advertisement, marketing and strong support from state governmental agencies who are promoting Panchkarma as a package of medical tourism and include it in the brochures on tourism send abroad. Other states lag behind in this strategy. Dr.D.B.Muzumdar M.D/Ayurveda-medicine (Mumbai-India) < dahpc > dear dr. Muzumdar, my point is one of emphasis, which is, that kerala vaidyas seems to rely less on bhasmas than in the north as for it being THE center for ayurveda, i am not meaning to step on any toes - certainly the vaidyas i know in Nepal would disagree! however, is it not true that the most advanced and authentic techniques of ayurveda, such as panch karma, have been spread from kerala?
