Dear Thierry

As per my knowledge I do not know any specific text in Ayurveda linking

eyesight and Shukradhatu. As per Ayurveda the Shukra dhatu is present in every

cell. That is the reason of regeneration of every cell. The Cataract is a

degenerative process causing diminishing of eyesight. The Charaka and Sushruta

both said in Sutrasthana that excess intake of Lavana rasa i.e salt and salty

food hamperes Shukradhatu and ability of Dyanendriya.

I have seen some cases in which patients who were use to excessive intake of

table salt were sufferer of diminished vision and some were from Prostate

Cancer. This is my observation which I am not able to support with any other

evidence.

Dear dr Upadhye and Aashish,

In his commentaries of Sarvarth Chintamani, an exhaustive astrological treatise,

prof B Suryanarain Rao stated:

" jaundice, when unchecked, will produce loss of sight or dimness in vision by

the increase of bile. Excessive sexual indulgence will take away the vitality

and subject the person to various eye and bodily diseases. "

Does this make sense in the ayurvedic theory ?

Thanks and regards

Thierry

Hi Thierry

Although I am not aware of a specific reference to shukra depletion

causing poor vision, generally speaking, poor eyesight can be a

symptom of majja dhatu kshaya. In turn, majja dhatu supports shukra,

so the excessive loss of shukra will deplete majja.

Similar to TCM, the eyes are related to heat, to pitta, and where

pitta is uncontrolled it will burn up the kapha/yin qualities of the

eye that balances the fire element. Just imagine the lacrimal

secretions, aqueous and vitreous humors drying up, because of excess

heat. Excess heat and pungent foods/herbs also dries up and consumes

shukra.

Dear Theirry,

That reminds me yet another reference mentioned in the Samanya Hetu (

Generalised aeitiology) of Netraroga (Eye Disorders ) as mentioned by Acharya

Sushruta , he mentions - " Ushnanutaptasya jalpraveshad............

...................Atimaithunat cha !! ( here this term Ati Maithunat brings

our attention to excessive sexual indulgence leading to Shukrakshaya being one

of the cause for the eye disorder.)
