Guest guest
Hi Does anyone have experience treating patients with kidney failure? I have a new patient who has been on dialysis since June 05. He wants treatment for headaches which have been constant since he had a dialysis tube fitted in his neck which became infected. The tube has been removed and is now fitted into his stomach, but the headaches continue. He is currently on the waiting list for a donor kidney and is wondering 2 things. 1. How much can acupuncture increase kidney function - perhaps to the degree that a transplant will not be necessary? 2. If he has a transplant he will be given immunosuppressant medications to prevent him rejecting the new kidney. Is acupuncture contraindicated in this instance, given that it is generally accepted that acupuncture strengthens the immune system? i.e. will it be acting against the medication and therefore increase the chances of rejection? This raises the broader question of treatment for other conditions in which the immune system is overactive such as autoimmune conditions. My understanding has always been that treatment will regulate immune function i.e. stimulate when deficient and settle it when overactive, but in this instance with immunosuppressant medication being taken, I'm not sure if it would be a good thing. Advice would be much appreciated Thanks Jason
Guest guest
I read on one list that Da Huang will help in kidney problems. I think the creatinine levels fall. However, it seems you would only want to use it if the pattern corresponds. Also, one book I've read mentions treating points all around the navel with direct moxa x 15 to slow down progression of kidney disease. Post-transplant drugs are toxic, so I would be likely to check points like Liv 5, to help the body metabolize it. Haven't any personal experience though. Guest guest
#1 I treated a man on dialysis due to polycystic kidney disease for 2 years while he awaited a transplant. He went from only eating, sleeping and voiding to having enough Qi to tile his kitchen floor after about 2 months of treatment. At the beginning the primary diagnosis was SP Qi and Yang Xu and that continued until the last 5 months when KD Yang Xu became predominant. I used a moxa box and needle moxa; liberally. Though I was able to strengthen him to a great degree his deterioration continued. Hemodialysis is an imperfect and delicately balanced substitute for kidneys. He was fortunate, his transplanted kidney functioned well enough that he didn't require acupuncture after transplantation. Herbal medicines were not considered. His nephrologist refused to treat him if he took herbal medicines. The reason given was that his biochemistry was complex enough without variables the nephrologist had no training to deal with. #2 I have two responses to this question. A) I had brief email correspondence with an acupuncturist who had a transplant and she continued acupuncture after the implantation. B) I know that many believe that the immune system is strengthened by acupuncture but there is no correspondent to the immune system in TCM. It's an inference based on the assumption that because many people who receive acupuncture treatment are less prone to infectious disease the immune system is strengthened. Correlation is not cause and effect. Transplant patients are closely monitored and there may be some measures from that which can warn of impending rejection. JOE > 1. Guest guest
Hi Nishant Very unfortunate to have such a state at so early an age. There are some panchgavya medicines, which are inexpensive and need to be taken for long time. If you can communicate your location, author can suggest locations from which to get the medicines and proper advise on their use. ________________________________ My wife age 24 has been diagnoded with ESRD (kidney Failure). Guest guest
Nishant It would be good for her to drink at least on cup of cucumber juice a day. Watermelon juice or watermelon is also excellent to have every day for kidneys. GB ________________- My wife age 24 has been diagnoded with ESRD (kidney Failure).
