Guest guest
he does have periods of much better hearing >>>By testing or subjective report Alon - fontainebleau1 Tuesday, August 14, 2001 10:20 PM Meniere's disease I have a 44 year old male patient diagnosed with Meniere's disease. His major problem is loss of hearing, neither tinnitus nor dizziness/vertigo are long-lasting or serious problems. He describes his hearing loss as sounds being muffled mostly in the right ear. I have been seeing this patient over the course of 8 months, and during that time it has become apparent his hearing loss is not permanent, he does have periods of much better hearing. It seems very clearly to be a case of congested fluids/phlegm in the inner ear, ie GB/SJ channnels. Pulse is generally slippery, occasionally slippery/wiry when he is stressed out. Tongue is somewhat enlarged, usually a thin greasy white (or sometimes yellow) coat. I have been using variations of Ban Xia Bai Zhu Tian Ma San, containing fairly high amounts of Ting Li Zi, Dan Nan Xing, Shi Chang Pu and Ban Xia lately in order to resolve the phlegm. His condition is stable right now, but I have been unable to open the ears and improve his hearing. Have any of you treated this condition with success and do you have any advice? I have considered using Western herbs, but not without some guidance as my training has been strictly in Chinese herbs. Guest guest
Phlegm in the ear can be somewhat tricky, as the standard Phlegm Damp transformers can sometimes dry the Phlegm and thicken it further, locking it in. This is especially true if there is even a hint of yin deficiency. The problem in the ear is that the Phlegm has nowhere to go (unless the drum ruptures) so must be slowly reabsorbed. It can be locally moved however (as seen in the variability of the hearing) before recongealing. A strategy that seems to work for some is to focus on gradual softening of the Phlegm with salty herbs, mu li, zhe be mu wa leng zi etc (with a guiding formula such as Xiao Luo Wan) while de-emphasising the drying elements. A small component of aromatic Damp dispersing and orifice opening (such as shi chang pu and yuan zhi) can also be useful, especially if the hearing improves or changes in response to strong smells - perfume, petrol. , fontainebleau1@h... wrote: > I have a 44 year old male patient diagnosed with Meniere's disease. > His major problem is loss of hearing, neither tinnitus nor > dizziness/vertigo are long-lasting or serious problems. Guest guest
I have ringing in my ears. Is that part of Menieres disease? I also get real dizzy sometimes and off balance. Sometimes things spin but not too much. That seems to happen in periods of time and then disappears for awhile. I haven't had the spinning in a long time. Isn't that the main symptom of Menieres? I also get alot of earaches and headaches. I would be interested in the answer to your question also or any remedies for ear problems. I have seen herbal formulas for tinnitus but was told they do not work. I had a mri but it did not reveal acoustic neuroma so I do not know what to do. This is a great board. Thanks. I have been diagnosed with Meniere's Disease. I have grown quite skeptical of M.D.'s over these past few years, but I really lucked out with the E.N.T. that I have. Of course, she reccomended a low-salt diet to keep the fluid from buiding up in my body, and therefore my ears. She wanted to write a script for a diuretic pill. I told her that I did not want to take pills, that I'd like to treat this with food, and herbs. That's when I asked her what she thought about me doing some research about diuretic herbs. To my shock, she said that it was fine and that she would prefer to treat it nutritionally, and that although she did not know much about herbs and Meniere's that she thought the herbs would be gentler on the body and that I could research it. Her only request was that I keep a list the herbs and a log of what my reactions are afterwards. So, after that long diatribe..... I find diuretic herbs that I can try. The idea is to reduce and maintain the fluid levels in my ear. so I'm looking for diuretic herb(s) that I can use on a daily basis for a long period of time. Also, can anyone tell me if there is anything thing I can do to deal with the vertigo after it starts. So far, I'm lucky that I have not had any nausea. Tammi U. Guest guest
Well, I can't speak for Meniere's Disease, but I have treated vertigo (due to fluid) four times with colloidal silver and three of those times mixed with DMSO. The results thus far with the added DMSO were permenent as well as immediate. Even with the rabbits wry neck just months ago, (an inner ear disturbance causing vertigo). The CS alone cured this problem post haste. And, by the way, the rabbit gave birth two days ago to three beautiful, healthy baby buns. A total accidental breeding by my daughter. The high doses of CS kick started the ole gal in the middle of winter no less!! She still did not end up relapsed after kindeling as they normally do either. That is a big deal. I HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend this mixture. One drop of DMSO in enough CS for both ears. fft herbal remedies , Tammi <wundrfulworld wrote: > > Hey all, I have been on the list for a few years. Guest guest
Yes, it is. One can have tinnitus without having meneiere's, but you cannot have Meniere's without the dizziness. The main symptoms include intermittant vertigo (dizziness or false sense of movement), tinnitus (ringing in the ears), ear pressure and/or pain, and conductive hearing loss. If you think you might have it, I'd get checked... but I have to warn you it is difficult to diagnose, unless you are in the middle of an " attack " . After my diagnosis last month, my husband and one of my friends (who was my doctor before she left the practice she was in) and I realized that I'd had it since Thanksgiving 2003. I am the mother of four children, and my husband goes out of town frequently. Which is a scary combo for me. Traditionally, Meniere's is treated with anit-enimic (sp) drugs. Antivert being one of the more popular one. I won't take it because when I take it I have suicidal thoughts, cry uncontrollably and will become violent without warning if I become angry. News Flash... This side effect is NOT in the literature. Surprised? I'm not. Err, it's not conducive to happy relations with your husband either. It is also treated using diuretics, anti-histamines, and steroids. All of these come with risks that I'm not happy with. Other things are a low sodium diet, and vertigo excercises - which I have not learned yet. I am currently taking Ginger and Ginko to help with th mild dizziness that washes over me from time to time that last for a few minutes or hours. Which it has helped. However, the only thing that works so far for the acute attacks where I cannot walk or hear is to take the steroids. I hate having to give in and take them, but when I am home alone with four kids under the age of twelve, and have no one that I can call to help me watch them - I get scared and feel I have no other choice. And they are the quickest thing that works at the moment I need something to work. I'm now looking into a more natural way to treat this. Unfortunately the info simply is not there. I've done a bit of research, and it seems that for long-term diuretic use dandelion root is one of the best choices because it does not deplete potassium. I started this tonight. My regular ENT is fine with this. She says that the meds are there if I need them, but she fully supports me looking into a more natural approach because nutrition and herbs would be gentler in the long run on my body. Hmm... I wonder if she was the rebel M.D. in school. I have also recently discovered that there are natural sources of steroid-type herbs and nutrients? Doc, do you know anything about this? If so, what are they and how safe are they? Does anyone have any suggestions?? Another question... Does anyone know where I can find a list of " hidden " sources of sodium in food?
