Piyusavarsi Ausadhalaya is the oldest Ayurvedic clinic in Kathmandu,

founded by the patriarch of the Bajracharya family seven hundred

years ago. The Bajracharya family are hereditary Buddhist priests and

originally hail from Kapilavastu, the birth place of Lord Gautama

Buddha. Their Bihara (monastery) is called Kanaka Chaitya Mahabihar,

and is one of the most famous Biharas in Kathmandu Valley. Our host,

Vaidya Madhu Bajra Bajracharya is son of the late Vaidya Madhu Bajra

Bajracharya, and is the last male heir to this incredible family

tradition.

 

The opportunity

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn, experience and

witness authentic Ayurvedic practices in the Himalayas, the

birthplace of Ayurveda. As part of the basic program you will receive

authentic Ayurvedic treatments, gather and study wild Ayurvedic herbs

with experienced vaidyas, participate in the preparation of time-

honored Ayurvedic remedies, and observe Ayurvedic clinical practices

and treatments.

 

The journey

While there is so much to see, the priority is to spend the most

amount of time in Kathmandu studying and experiencing Ayurveda.

However, there will be opportunities to do a little sight-seeing, to

and from, and in and around the Kathmandu Valley, including the World

Heritage Sites of Pashupatinath (a Shiva Temple amongst the top eight

dhams in Hinduism worldwide), Boudhanath (one of Asia's largest

stupa), Swayambhunath (one of the oldest stupas) and Bhaktapur, the

glorious medieval city of pagodas. In addition, the current plan is

to come through New Delhi and go overland by train, passing through

Agra to visit the Taj Mahal, the holy city of Varanasi, and then up

to Gorakhpur and across the Nepalese border to visit Lumbini (the

birthplace of Lord Buddha). After this, the plan is to take a short

flight from Bhairawa to Kathmandu, or go by bus. For those who do not

want to do the overland trip, they can fly in directly to Kathmandu

from New Delhi. Once we have completed the program in Kathmandu, you

are welcome to add to your itinerary, such as taking a 10 day

Vipassana meditation retreat in Kathmandu, go trekking in the

Himalayas, or fly back to Delhi from Kathmandu. All in all the total

program in Nepal will be approximately 12 days, and for those wishing

to travel overland, an extra 8-10 days.

February/March 2009, depending upon how many people we get and how

liability, and will assume that everyone will arrange their own
