Birth Doula's Vs. Hospital Birth

Hi

We did use a birth doula, but it was not a good thing to have done.

You know when we called the doula after the membranes ruptured, the

doula suggested us not to go to the hospital or call the doctor.

Instead she suggested my wife to drink plenty of water to replenish

the amniotic fluid! I'm not kidding. The water broke at 1.30 AM and

she came home at 7.30 AM. My wife never had any contractions and she

was given castor oil along with orange juice. She was made to walk

like 2 miles while she was still losing amniotic fluid. Then before

going to the hospital she wanted my wife to eat some ice cream so

that all her cravings are satisfied before going to the labor and

delivery room. When an ultrasound was done at the hospital she had

only 20% amniotic fluid left in her body and was not a good

situation. So my wife had to be induced with Pitocin since she was

not having any contractions and this wonderful doula was making my

wife climb stairs and what not. By God's grace my wife was able to

deliver the baby normally without much complications. The Ob/Gyn was

miffed and astonished that we did not go to the hospital immediately

when the water broke. He also said there are dangers of the cord

coming dropping and coming out before the baby. The doula we were

seeing has supposedly 20 years of experience!

Do you personally know of any postpartum Doula with good practical

knowledge in Ayurveda in Houston, TX area ?

Thanks,

DT

> i strongly encourage you to find a midwife rather than seek

advice online..........all of the theoretical knowledge in the world is nothing

compared to a woman who has not only given birth herself but is properly

trained and has delivered hundreds of babies - just having that kind of energy

around your entire family some piece of mind!...........................

Hi DT

sorry to hear of your experience - that does seem like some pretty

odd advice...

to be honest, i was a little hesitant with advising a doula only

because the standards aren't as rigorous for a trained/certified midwife

doulas are a rather new phenomena in north america, so 20 yrs of

experience at a high level seems unlikely to me

anyway, i would strongly encourage you to find a certified midwife

and contact the local laleche league for breastfeeding support

keep trying - you will find someone you like

i wish you were closer and i could give you hands on support

i will see if i can track down someone for you

you also might pick up Aviva Jill Romm's book " Natural Health After

Birth "

she's a midwife and herbalist, and is now just finishing her medical

degree

best...
