Simply wash the hands with soap and water before the reading.

The normal blood sugar ratings for children are the generally the same

as adults with a few exceptions - a major one being - that if the

child is having Hypoglycemic symptoms this should be watched very

carefully - developing children should not have low blood sugar - it

can damage the development of their brains - if the child has a

tendency to run low blood sugars then learn to recognize when this is

happening - sweating, fatigue, tremors, confusion - take the blood

sugar reading - if it is below 75 (some say 70 but this is too low)

treat immediatly - if the child is taking Insulin be careful about the

dose. Some children will begin Hypoglycemia symptoms at a higher level

than others and the parents must be alert to that and treat the

symptoms rather than just going by the glucose reading - if the child

starts any kind of Hypoglycemic symptoms below 80 give a little

glucose - do not depend on fructose or sucrose for this. The parent

must learn to be alert to their child and what is happening with the

child - many parents easily know when their child is going high or low

- just like in the dose of Insulin in Type 1 patients - with

experience one learns how to control the dose more precisely without

over or under dosing - this develops a kind of intuition based on

experience. Steadiness is the key.

The treatment of the child will be different depending on whether the

disease is Type 1 or Type 2. Type 1 should be under the constant

observation of a physician. In Type 2 the responsibility for getting

the disease under control is with the parent. The most important point

in both types is to keep the diet regular without ever having a

challenge to Insulin functions with high glycemic foods - some people

believe this is not important with Type 1 patients - but if the child

eats sweets and then has to have adjustments to their Insulin this is

an unnecessary stress on the individual - at the least this causes

glucose spikes which are harmful in the long run and are responsible

for many of the complications of Type 1 including getting the dosing

schedule under control - children can take a little higher sugar

levels (if they are active) than adults - but still I think sugar

levels should always average below 165 fasting in Type 1- the goal for

Type 2 is to keep the fasting blood sugar below 110 at the max and

lower is better - the ideal fasting blood sugar is in the 80 to 90

range with an average of 85 being perfect.

For children with Type 1 the goal fasting range changes somewhat

according to age -

Under age 6 - 100-165

Age 6-12 - 90-165

Age 13-19 - 90-130

Children with diabetes must have a regular life - the most important

thing is diet and the most important thing in diet is no extreme

tastes especially of course sweet taste - but other extreme tastes

should also be avoided so as to not stimulate cravings or extreme

reactions associated with imbalanced Doshas. One thing to keep in mind

is there was a strong study done that shows a link between milk and

Type 2 diabetes - this is confirmation of ancient Ayurvedic

observations which also made this link. If a child has developed Type

2 diabetes it is clear that this is a Genetic tendency that will have

to be managed throughout life - a parent should dedicate themselves to

helping the child have as normal a life as possible - which can be

achieved if all of the factors are understood - a parent of a child

with chronic disease should become an expert in that disease if at all

possible.

I gave a talk in Japan to physicians on Prameha/Madhumeha it was

recorded and my daughter is transcribing that - I will post it here

when she finishes.

Thank you so much for confirming my doubts. As far as my son's health

goes, he had a thorough checkup in school at the beginning of the year,

and was diagnosed as healthy, and as far as I know has no diabeters.

However, he put on some weight, so I thought it wouldn't hurt to check

since I do check my blood sugar level once in about 3 months (mine was

around 88 on an empty stomach).

I will also bear in mind the precautions of low blood sugar that you

have mentioned.

I look forward to reading it.

With best regards.
