hi bonnie

relying on one thing to help you sleep probably won't work if the

issue is a chronic condition - herbs like jatamamsi or the similar

valerian are much much milder sleeping aids than something like a

sleeping pill

for more information on insomnia please read message:

one sure way to get to sleep is to exercise vigorously during the day

nothing like a hard day of physical labour to promote a sound,

restful sleep

How long does it take for Jatamansi to work once you start taking it?

I have been trying it to help me sleep me now for a couple of weeks

and so far it isn't working.

Thanks my job entails much in the way of very physical work, to the

point that I perspire, which I never do even in summer. I am currently

taking 12.5 mg. Ambien and 2 mg. of Clonipin along with the Jatamansi. I

was hoping that if I got enough of it in my system there would no longer be

a need for Rx drugs. I sleep fine on this combination but would really

rather try a more natural approach, but I guess there is no magic bullet.

i think you are p[probably physically exhausted when you get home.

this makes it impossible to stay awake in the early evening.

The body does not sleep in the early evening until morning though.

If you sleep by 8 it is out of exhaustion and your body collapses and has a NAP

if you could stay awake until nine I feel you may have more luck in sleeping

through the night.

When you get home, have a cool shower, wear comfy clothes, have a nice cup of

ginger and chamomile tea - for relaxation Chamomile and energization ginger.

then have a light and satisfying meal and go for a fifteen minute stroll - in a

place that is nice so that you feel relaxed and refreshed.

When you go to bed do some deep breathing, count one inhalation and exhalation

as one breath and then count like that ten breaths - once you have counted to

ten count down to one again, this will help you sleep.

Going to bed at around nine or ten will help you sleep more successfully through

the night.

When you work strenously like that you need to unwind and change gears otherwise

you will be really running yourself down without getting refreshed.

be sure to drink plenty of water all day this will keep you from being

physically exhausted as well as you are loosing a lot of water in perspiration.

I am physically exhausted and I can barely keep my eyes open. Having to get

up at 4:00am is difficult which is why I go to bed so early in the hopes of

getting at least eight hours in, otherwise I can't function. I will take

your advice and give it all a try, thank you so much for your response.

Dear Bonnie,

You have received a number of drugless approach suggestions, taking

view of what you posted, but these you tried already incl.

Jatamansi. Which means the root cause is not being covered.

From 135 lbs 3 years ago to 205 lbs an year ago was a long weight

journey, created by anti-depressants or CNS directed drugs, which

you are yet to jettison. They have caused you weight gain, poor

circulation, foot pain, back pain and most important, inability to

sleep, except when drugged. Insulin resistance and endocrinal disorders are most

observed effects of the pills Zyprexa, Ambien, Clonipin etc.

If these drugs are stopped, you will sleep naturally, as you are

early riser, work heavily to the extent of taking bath in your own

sweat. Perhaps tension and anxiety about daughter may also be eating

up your sleep, but author would like to blame only CNS directed

drugs, since he is yet to find a patient who is exception to your

problems after being long term on CNS drugs.

The residues of these drugs are there in your blood and you need at

least two liver detoxifications to remove residues, excess fat in

adipose tissues on belly, hips and breasts. darkening of skin

indicate insulin resistance or metabolic syndrome. Liver must be

changed from fat generator to fat burner. Due to lack of adequate

energy, you get exhausted where you can fall dead asleep, but the

side effects of drugs (excitating adrenals e.g.) keeps you awake. 75 pounds cant

be lost by

simply a drug or fast or gym. The brain developing drug resistance

is found in 100% patients, they dont get even 2 hours sleep if they

have ben taking the pill for more than 5-7 years.

Since your problem of insomnia is linked to pills, simple lifestyle

suggestions are unlikely to help, though they would help everyone

else. Your lifestyle routine is in harmony with that of an ascetic,

but being in out-of-tune with sunlight cycle, excess Vata is causing

anxiety and need for pills. Estrogen dominance as a result of peri

or full menopause can also be a likely root cause, in which case

liver detoxification can be a very effective. But you need

consultation with an ayurvedist.

Hope you find a helpful one nearby.

My Dear Dr. Bhate, after all these years I'm still a mess, and you remember.

I am down to 182 right now and can finally feel my ribs. Todd posted a list

awhile back and there was an ayurvedist in Connecticut, but since then my

computer crashed and I lost all my addresses, she was in Southington, Ct.

If Todd still has that list maybe he could post it again??

Bhate Sahib has written you a wonderful response, he remembered so many details

about you.

That was really nice.

I think that the drinking of water and perhps taking electrolytes will help.

Also, with the amount of sweating you are doing I am sure you are getting rid of

a lot of toxins! But to make liver cleanse even more you can take milk thistle

tea - boil it at home and drink it all day - bring it to work in a thermos.

This should help as well.

What work do you do?

I

was selling men's furnishings, then I got sick of the long hours and took on

what they call a support position, my hours are wonderful 7 to 3 and Sunday

and Monday off. It involves a lot of lifting, stooping, bending etc. Today

I had to be there at 5:00 am. I am just now getting home. I like the job

and need to get used to the heavy labor and a lot of running around. Good

exercise anyway, but I am tired at night and do go to bed very early. I

will try your tea, as well as many of the other suggestions I was given.

A simple source of L-Tryptophan is Indian cow milk and Yellow skin

Banana. after 18 hours of hectic activity, author just takes one or

two elaichi kela, a glass of milk with cow ghee 1/2-1 tsp dissolved

and in 10-15 minutes is off to the deep sleep. The sleep quality is so

good that 5-6 hours sleep is all that is needed to wake up fresh and

finish physical routine in another 60 minutes. Of course not all will

respond to milk+banana in same manner but Vata(Major)+pitta (minor)

respond well, despite milk+banana is a viruddha ahara in general. IT

is viruddha ahara when banana is unripe, or remains green skin after

ripening.

Finer points of ayurveda do not exist in samhitas or texts, they need

to be understood with self experience or trusting other's

experiences.

Dear Monica, bless your heart, every thing you have listed from L-theanine

to great nights sleep is in my kitchen, and suffice to say it hasn't done a

thing for me, if anything tryptophan hypes me up and makes my heart

palpatate. I do appreciate your help and am happy to hear your sister is

doing so well.

Very interesting information on milk and ripe yellow banana being compatible!

Normally you would not think so and I used to condemn those people who eat them

together. That makes custard made of hot milk and banana pieces a good dessert

then!

I love milk and banana's, used to eat them cut up in milk when I was a kid,

of course I still do that, but it doesn't help me sleep. Turkey has

tryptophan in it too. GABA and 5 HTP are supposed to be good as well, except

for me of course.

Dear Shirish,

Finer points of Ayurveda do exist in Samhitas or texts, but one should be able

to co-relate them in proper sequence.

AND finer points of Ayurveda cannot be understood without a detailed knowledge

of the basic principles (SIDDHANT) of Ayurveda.

Self-experience and other's experience may have it's own value, but why belittle

Ayurveda just because many of the things are not known / comprehended /

understood / applied without correct understanding?
