Story of a wisdom tooth

I don't know if this is fit to be posted. I would not mind if you

decide otherwise.

I do not know if wisdom tooth has anything to do with wisdom, as such.

However, I recently learnt some wisdom, sure the hard way and thanks

to my not very friendly wisdom tooth. The experience has something to

do with Ayurveda and hence this post.

Two weeks back, I had some faint sensation of pain at the lest side

wisdom tooth. Like a busy city dweller, I did not take any note and

went about doing my work. The tooth was waiting for me to treat it

with some respect, and when that did not happen, started bothering me

more. A travel was planned, and I drove across Maharashtra in the

October heat. That too in an area famous for spicy, hot peanut chutney

with red hot chilly powder. For two days I treated myself to this

favorite food of my childhood. After two days, the pain in the tooth

was so severe that it almost grounded me.

Seeing a dentist was last option. So, spoke to few ayurvedist

friends. I got some 5 suggestions:

Gargle with turmeric powder plus sea salt mixed in water.

Gandoosh of sesame oil.

gargle with Triphala kaadha

Apply clove oil, with some Camphoot powder thrown in.

Mix half spoon of Hing (asafetida ) with dash of lemon juice, make a

tablet and put it at the toothache spot.

I tried some of them and got relief from the pain. On the third day, I

can as well chew with that wisdom tooth.

One friend had told me, if the tooth is infected, I generally apply

Kuchla lep from outside. If you do that twice a day for two days, the

infection will be killed forever. No doubt he cautioned me about

Kuchla being poisonous of so. While the wisdom tooth was happy with

whatever Ayurveda I had applied to it so far, my own journey to wisdom

started from here.

While rummaging through my cupboard, I found a bottle of Shodhan oil.

One of the ingredients was Kuchla. " wow !! why not I apply this oil

from outside, so that the germ will be killed. " Without giving a

second thought, I started applying the oil from outside. This was the

time my ear, the same side as the tooth was paining a little. I put in

some warm coconut oil in the ear. Almost filled the ear with warm

coconut oil thrice a day. The next day I woke up with a swollen chic.

The gum was swollen like never before and though the toothache was

gone, I hardly could open my mouth to eat anything. My ayurvedist

suggested me few medicines, but I never told him about my own

experiments with wisdom. Finally I had to see dentist. He saw my oily

chic and told me, because you are bombarding it with oil, the heat

generated there has caused puss which has no way to come out. Finally

a four day course of antibiotic brought the things to normal.

Wisdom I learnt: Many people will tell you remedies. The remedies are

time tested and right. But it is only a Vaidya that knows, what

combination works and when. Never ever try to act smart.

[Moderator: A formulation containing kuchala, which is supposed to be used when

agni ( not only hunger but total metabbolism) is very low, digestion poor, low

blood sugar, lethargy, dizziness, fatigue, low b.p. etc, was thrown away during

annual cleaning drive just yesterday, as similar cases were successful with

liver detoxification. When a patient comes loaded with hepato-toxic synthetic

drugs, should vaidya apply old knowledge and give him deepana drugs or clean his

liver? Your post is a good wisdom pinch to all!]
