Namashkar!

My friend has been found to be suffering from hypothyroidism. She is 31 and is

taking altrocxin everyday.

I read somewhere that Hypothyroidism is a tri-doshic disorder. I would like to

learn more about how ayurveda treats this disease. I request esteemed vaidhyas

of this forum to share information.

Thanks and regards

Shilpa

Hi Shilpa,

No gland acts in isolation and whenever one gland is in distress,

others underfunction. That is the reason, when PCOS is

detected, pancreas, ovaries and thyroid are found to be affected

together. Pituitary hormones are also affected. Though modern science

treats single gland at a time, and tries to make up the deficient

hormones synthetically(manipulation), ayurveda looks at the root cause and tries

to

correct (modulation) the functions by herbs, diet and lifestyle which includes

yoga

too. Whether obesity is caused by hypothyroidism or hormonal imbalance

is due to obesity is the question like which is first, chicken or egg?

But total view of the patient, including stress and its origin becomes

important. Author feels that often, elimination of stress is adequate

drugless approach.

Panchkarma (especially basti) is a sort of " Brhmastra " in such cases. Just as

some post today says how an oil containing kuchala, when applied externally

caused swelling, giving phtosterols through oils/ghrutams to body is very

effective approach. This approach is very wildly used in west by peri menopausal

women by applying creams based on wild yam.

Author used limited panchkarma in few cases successfully. Liver detoxes were

essential to restore secretion of certain internal chemicals (Sex hormones

binding globulins) by liver, so that excess hormones are removed through

elimination and the ones which make liver the fat burner are secreted in

appropriate proportion. Patient must be willing to add walking to his lifestyle

after liver is restored. slow rate permanent weight loss and restoration of

thyroid hormones (T3, T4, TSH) was the result, as verified by patients for their

own curiosity.

Since whole protocol is patient specific, instead of trying to get

some quick fix home remedies or herbs, it may be better to consult

nearest vaidya. Several Vaidyas have posted their Panchkarma facility details in

this group. You may also see Contact list file in our database, accessible from

home page of the group website.
