the article was useful until it got to the issue of how to get enough

vitamin D, an issue that i have raised several times on this list

in some my area its not uncommon to have no direct sunlight for more

than a month at a time during fall and winter, and as a result

sunlight can't be an effective method of vitamin D synthesis

research has suggested that people who live in such areas and don't

follow traditional dietary practices that include significant amounts

of D3 in the diet are at risk for autoimmune disorders including

multiple sclerosis, as well as all the other risk factors

of course none of this is specifically mentioned in ayurveda, but if

we apply the principles for ayurveda by eating bioregionally and

following local, traditional practices, then all our nutritional

needs will be satisfied

dietary sources of cholecalciferol (D3) are typically poor, but are

very good in oily fish including herring, oysters, salmon, mackerel

and sardine

its easy to see why these fish were such an important part of the

diet for coastal peoples living in cooler, cloudier climates

some fortified foods including milk and cereals show a high vitamin D

content, but this is ergocalciferol (D2), which is a fungal source of

vitamin that is obtained through radiation, and only has 1/4 of the

the biological activity

i recommend that anyone who doesn't live in a warm sunny climate take

D3 all year long, with doses stating at about 1000 IU

another method to obtain vitamin D are the regular use of tanning booths

http://www.ajcn.org/cgi/content/full/80/6/1645

also note that this article states that the regular use of sunscreens

reduced vitamin D synthesis by 95%!!

another reason to avoid sunscreen!!

as well as this, you can now also get vitamin D3 as a cream that can

be applied to the skin

best...
