Guest guest
Absolutely. My suggestions would be to use herbs like marshmallow root, licorice, red raspberry leaf and slippery elm gruel to soothe and heal ulcerated tissue. Wheat germ oil taken by mouth may help here too. Take fresh ground flax seeds and psyllium husks to help stop diahrrea. Try a 3-7 day cleanse on teas, veggie juices and broths - or add small amounts of cooked fruit like apples. An herbal bolus can be used as well. Place above herbs in olive oil and heat until warm. Cool and pour olive oil into an ice cube tray. Before bedtime remove an olive oil cube from the tray, form into a small bullet shape, and insert into the rectum. Do this 6 nights out of 7 a week. Dr. Chrisptopher's herbal bolus recipe contains squaw vine herb, slippery elm bark, yellow dock root, comfrey root, marshmallow root, mullein leaves, chickweed herb, and golden seal to give you more ideas about which herbs you can use. You can also use coconut oil or cocoa butter instead of olive oil. All grains in the diet should be soaked or sprouted. No refined flours or sugars whatsoever, and premade whole grain products like breads/pastas should be eaten as rarely as possible. There are thousands of great recipes (existing and waiting to happen) one can execute with soaked and sprouted grains. For detailed info the book Healing with whole foods by Paul Pitchford is nice. Finally and probably most importantly this person should look to address the stress (along with other causes) that may be related to this colitis. Stress has been shown to be a key factor in colitis, so any form of skilled relaxation that she/he prefers should help relieve stress and therefore the cause of the colitis. Guest guest
My wife has been suffering from ulceratibe colitis since the last 14 years. the problem was diagonised during her pregnency when we were based in Kerala. She was initially put on allopathic drugs, and when the symptoms becane acute, she was also put on mesacol enema. We subsequently shifted to Ayurveda, and within six months her symptoms vanished. She did not have them again for another 6 years (approximately). The symptoms reappeared again when I was posted in Rajkot. (I am now posted at Mumbai). The Vaid who treated my wife is unfortunately no more. We also do not have any of her presciptions. The Vaid did not follow a system of issuing prescriptions. Because of the relapse, she has been on a maintenance course of Mesacol. The associated problem is that she is physically weak and anemic. She is allergic to iron tonics and milk, which aggrevate the symptoms. Is there a permanent cure for Ulcerative Colitis and anemia? All suggestions / advice are welcome. Guest guest
Hi Anil menon My self Dr.alpesh.s upadhyay,I am Ayurvedic consultant, my father Dr.shahikant upadhyay, is 33 years Ayurvedic experience doctor, we cure so many cases of Ulcerative colitis, According to Ayurveda this is AGNI related vyadhi,? first be prepare your mind for Ayurvedic science, in Ayurveda 50 % is diet, and 50 % is medication, but don’t worry, you will be all right soon, The psychological aspect of colitis is also significant. Recent studies have shown that stress and strain are the major contributory factors in causing and aggravating the disease. Our survey also confirmed that environmental stress, personal stress and stress resulting from natural calamities were important factors. So the psychosomatic nature of the disease must be kept in mind while undertaking its treatment. Grahani has been widely described in the classic Ayurvedic literature. It shows exactly the same clinical picture as chronic colitis. Frequency of loose motions with profuse mucus discharge, pain and foul odour are the most prominent diagnostic symptoms of Grahani. In ulcerative colitis, bleeding is an additional feature which may occasionally be present in cases of Grahani also. Grahani is a syndrome in which agni, the digestive power, is supposed to be at fault. When agni becomes depressed, ama dosha (undigested waste material) accumulates and is passed in the stools. So the aim of treatment should be to enhance the potency of agni, thereby reducing the formation of ama dosha. Though Ayurvedic medicines are capable of regularizing the agni to normalcy, yogic exercises, by virtue of their specificity, work as catalytic agents for stabilizing the agni at a higher level even if the medicines are withdrawn. This in itself is an important achievement, as medicines cannot be used permanently. The disease can only be considered as cured when the agni is balanced without the use of any external medicine. We have established two Panchkarma clinics in Mumbai and providing all the Panchkarma treatments. Our centres are operating in the name and style as Sai Panchkarma and Ayurvedic clinic. Guest guest
Dear Anil Dr Upadhyay has already posted some analysis of the colitis. You may also see old messages #10520 and 10523 on enhancing digestive agni. Toyphoid, Maleria, Allergies, colitis exacerbate during monsoon. Ayurveda describes rutu-charya, the lifestyle and food suitable for each season. The present season in South West of India is Varsha rutu or monsoon, about to end soon. The Agni becomes very slow in this season(water extinguishes fire), hence acharyas brought in various festivals and vratas, so that simple food, fasts maintain health. The chaturmasa period in which many festivals come includes Ashadha, Shravana, Bhadrapad and Ashwin lunar months. Ayurvedic recommendations during this period can be summarized as boiled water, fasts, reduced and simple food avoiding sweets and using old stored food grains which are easy to digest. The herbs such as ginger, lemon, mint, onion, garlic, fenugreek, cumeen seeds, asfoetida, saindhav salt, mustard, turmeric, coriander seeds are all agni enhancers and articles devoted to these may be found in this group archives written by several vaidyas. The undigested or partially digested food gives rise to ama. The frequent members in this family of foods include legumes (pulses) and concentrated and fortified dairy items. These are difficult to digest normally but become more heavy in Varsha rutu. As a result of synthetic medicines taken during long term treatment, liver and pancreas reduce their digestive juices and enzymes, leading to anemia, constant fatigue thereby. The entire process of using food to make seven dhatus of our body is Agni. When it suffers, blood is the first dhatu victim, causing anemia. Weak hunger, body pains after little work, lack of vigor an enthusiasm in everything, reduced libido, scanty or irregular menses etc are frequent symptoms. And these increase in Varsha rutu, as Agni is reduced. Sunlight or Teja is fundamental element that contributes to Agni. Author will describe one case of a patient suffering from anemia as a result of long term chemical medicines given for low fever. The patient's liver was underfunctioning, had some swelling and hardness. Gas, constipation, heaviness and dull pain in the stomach were his constant companions. In drugless approach, patient was asked to take food only once, taking only fruits in the dinner. Green gram water with a little ginger, lemon, mint leaves added, sauted with ghee, cumeen seeds, fenugreek seeds. Old unpolished rice, barley, Jwar were cereals used in moderation. Refined sugar and salt were replaced by Jaggery/honey and Saindhav salt. Bottle gourd, snake gourd, pumpkin were the vegetable choices, which are easy to cook and are cooling vegetables. Soups made by cooking leafy vegetables for just one whilstle in pressure cooker were also taken by patient, adding a little salt and lemon for taste. Cloves, black pepper, ginger were also used sparingly, to make soups tasty if patient disliked the taste. Instead of Soya, Safflower or Sunflower oil, only seasame oil was used in very small quantity with Khitchri. Patient felt weakness for just two weeks. Though it took some time for patient to adjust to simple bland diet, the hard stools with mucous reduced as a result of added fiber and old grains. The light massage and basti twice a week helped strengthening colon's elimination power. After four weeks patient eliminated thread worms in the stools, for 2-3 days in succession. This was surprise as no medication for worms was given. Thread worms are difficult to diagnose unless they are eliminated in stools. When a patient's colon is empty, experienced vaidyas can find such a possibility by palpation. From seveth week, the hunger increased almost by 50%. Patient wanted to eat more and heavier foods, but was continued on same regime. After eight weeks, patient started feeling strength, improved glow on on face. However, the mindset of the patient required confirmation by blood report too. Liver herbs were now added to the lifestyle, after eight weeks had passed. After twelve weeks, not only hunger and digestion were good, but vigor was improved, swellings on legs and knee were reduced, patient had become slightly slim by weight loss of four kilograms. Patient was now walking about 2 kilometers every morning. Hair-loss had stopped. Good sleep and freshness on waking up was also experienced. There are many recommendations for increasing agni, written by other vaidyas in the archives. Ginger pieces with few drops of lemon and saindhav salt for instance. Aloe vera pulp with little turmeric and saindhav salt is another example. The use of copper water or water boiled to 50% has also been described. The most effective medicine for increasing agni is fasting, with fruit juices for those who become afraid to observe fast with just boiled water. The purpose of the post on the birthday of this group is to create the awareness that food (which incluses free Prana too) itself is the permanent cure for many chronic and seemingly incurable conditions. ayurveda , anil menon <anilmenon1963 wrote: > > My wife has been suffering from ulceratibe colitis since the last 14 years. <snip> > > Because of the relapse, she has been on a maintenance course of Mesacol. Guest guest
Dear Anil Menon, Very chronic ulcerative colitis takes comparatively long periods to heal. Curability in such cases can only be assessed after actually examining the patient. Even though total cure cannot be achieved always, a fair amount of control and relief is definitely possible by Ayurvedic treatments, particularly Panchkarma procedures. Anaemia is definitely curable in majority of cases by proper medication and diet supplementation. Guest guest
As an extension of food for collitis, following info has been experienced as useful. Banana is an exceptional fruit, useful under constipation, collitis and dyscentry, depending upon the form in which it is used, and how it is taken. While Banana with milk is a incompatible diet, it is successfully used as a " sleeping aid " by this author, but only for specific constitution patients. So much material on net is placed, that it is adequate to just go through: http://www.kuruppampady.com/bananaproperties.php The yellow skin variety, (termed Elaichi Kela in Mumbai) naturally ripened, very sweet taste, is most useful in collitis. ayurveda , anil menon <anilmenon1963 wrote: > > My wife has been suffering from ulceratibe colitis since the last 14 years. <snip>

Guest guest
I have fistulizing crohn's disease on and was on Remicade for more than 5 yrs, until I lost my medical insurance. Remicade saved my life, I was miserable before starting it but tolerable to good after. I am currently on Asacol, have been since I was diagnosed in 1994, and just recently my new GI started me on 6-mp. He says that if I get to the point of needing Remicade again we will go with Humira, which is a weekly injection that I can give myself, I reacted to Remicade and had to be pre-medicated with solu-medrol and tagament before each treatment and with the Humira, it is made different so I shouldn't react. I am sure you can find a lot of info on Remicade.com.
