Guest guest
Nameste My daughter who is 3 yrs old, gets darkened every time she goes to pool even though i apply Sunscreen lotion with more than 40SPF, I thought may be because of sun, but sometime we took her to pool when it was absolutely cloudy & no sun at all, then also i noticed that she got tanned in spite of applying waterproof sunscreen lotion, I am really worried as is not regaining her original color & this tanning seems to be permanent Any ayurvedic solution to this please Thanks Roopa

Did you have gestational diabetes during pregnancy, when this daughter was in womb? 2. Does diabetes run in your or husbands family? 3. Are your periods become irregular or scanty, possibly with weight gain after the birth of your daughter. Did you take any allopathic medication for regularising cycles, ovulation? 4. Is daughter overweight for her age? 5. Was she given all vaccines required as per current practice? These questions require answer only YES/NO. But if you wish you can elaborate further. If some info you dislike stating onlist, you may send it off-list.

The word " likely " was chosen, since there remains always some likelihood in e-communication. communication has not progressed yet to see and feel the patient. Author is researching this condition for quite some time, having noted very small babies aged 6 months onwards are exhibiting similar problems. some more info would be able to sharpen the picture. Now that her darkening of the skin is more or less permanent, is it all the skin on the body, or only certain areas have dark patches. The patches need not be total coal black, but they can be velvety, light-brown-to-black. Examine posterior and lateral folds of the neck, body folds and creases behind joints, under the arms, the axilla or in the groin, umbilicus and other areas too. back-side of hands, upper side of feet, ankle joint skin, knee-joint skin, the small central area close to waist line, where buttocks join, all become important here. This type of patches has been seen for children aged 6 months to youth aged 20 years. If there is only general darkening on legs, thighs, arms, then there is a different indication. A sample photographs have been stored in photo section of ayurveda website, in album " Dr Bhate Photos " . Look at these and see whether they match with your daughters condition. This album was created today only, and is likely to receive many more photos in future. The likelyhood that your daughters condition may be closer to these is indicated by your answers to the previous questions.

Guest guest
Bhateji, I went though my daughter's body, she is not patchy, i mean to say her darkening of skin is more of uniform thoughout the body which exposed to sun/water in pool, rather than patchy, her skin color at the place which covered by swim suite is slightly better comapared to other part. Her skin at the neck folding, under the arms, the axilla or in the groin, upper side of feet have not changed the color, but all other aprt of the body has changed noticebly only after going for swimimmmg that too just coluple of times, Her buttocks were very dark since birth, kind of patchy & more dark comapared to all other body since birth, now entire body has turned to the same colur, Why could this be, I didn't take any medicine/help to conceive her, never felt sick not even simple fever, cold, cough though out pregnancy, just had GD but through dieting i kept it under control without medicine/insulin, used to eat healthy food thoughout pregnancy, but used to have more egg, 2 a day.. please let me know where did i go wrong or what care should be taken now...Its hard for me to see her skin change day by day Thank you so much for the help Roopa
Guest guest
Dark patches on the skin of children, few months old to youth say, 20 years old, are an indication of Insulin Resistance(IR), a topical disorder driven by excess insulin that may begin at any age. Even a baby born few weeks before can have it. It causes velvety, light- brown-to-black, excess pigmentation marks. In your daughter's particular case, she had patches on buttocks. The condition is most often associated with obesity and endocrine disorders. Skin patches are manifestation of insulin resistance, characterized by impaired biological responses to insulin. Skin darkening is generally found in the areas which sweat excessively. Groin, armpit for example. The areas not exposed to sunlight, those which remain damp due to sweat are often the sites for dark patches. Excessive wrong foods, especially starches and sugars, can cause insulin resistance when lack of physical activity leads to insufficient cellular oxygen. This will result in elevated insulin levels. Insulin spillover (from excessive production due to obesity or insulin insensitivity into the skin) results in abnormal hyper- pigmentation being observed. Many drugs such as cortico-steroids, oral contraceptives, drugs directed to central nervous system such as anti-epileptics, de-odorants, sweat suppressants, skin lotions are also known to cause this. Skin, being the second kidney, is the ultimate garbage dump. The elevated insulin levels in the body activate insulin receptors in the skin, forcing it to grow abnormally. Acrochordons (skin tags) are often found in and around the affected areas. One case of this author had skin tag on the nipple of the breast. It can be seen that where there is local excess of insulin, blood sugar will also be high, causing fungus infection. When one applies anti-fungal cream, which contains a small proportion of steroids, the area darken permanently, even though fungal infection may get eliminated. The corticosteroids such as Betamethasone valerate are used in many lotions which suppress sunlight allergic reactions. This increases the risk of local side effects such as skin thinning, and those on other parts of the body, such as a decrease in the production of natural hormones by glands. In your daughters case, please check up the contents of the sun- screen lotion. The lotions are known to release extra free radicals from absorbed chemicals, see Ref. 1 The possibility of adverse health effects associated with the synthetic compounds in most sunscreens is described in ref 2, and could also be the cause of darkening of the skin. While excessive sun exposure is known to cause skin cancer, using a lotion with more than spf 8 is known to suppress vitamin D generation to an extent 95% [Ref. 3]. Usefulness of Vit D in preventing cancers, auto-immune diseases and cardiovascular diseases is discussed in Ref. 4. Diabetic, or pre-diabetic parents (suffering from Insulin resiatnce, PCOS) they can pass on insulin insensitivity to their children. The tanning as a result of sun light exposure is in reality a protection developed by body to reduce UV absorption.. Hyper-pigmentation by melanin produces tan in the sunlight exposed areas. In your daughter's case, purification chemicals in water, sun screen lotion may have enhanced the tan. Her succeptibility to darkening may have been induced by diabetes in parents. Treatment protocol: Reducing the circulating insulin and increasing cellular oxygen by dieting, exercise, pranayama and medication can lead to improvement of the skin problem. Author notices lightened skin complexion when women take liver detox, reducing the xenohormones trapped in skin layers. These xenohormones often cause darkened skin. Correlation between liver detox, increased formation of sex hormone binding globulins (SHBG) and their action on reducing androgens in case of women suffering from PCOS is well researched area. In addition to drugless approaches such as panchkarma, liver detoxification, pranayama, panchgavya medicine have been found most effective but since they are not exported, not being discussed here. Author has used these medicines successfully to reduce the facial tans. The medicines along with liver detox were given to tackle PCOS, and skin complexion improvement was seen as beneficial side effect. This offered the motivation to find why the darkened patches appear and they lighten with hormone balancing medicines as well as liver detox. Detoxification program using fresh vegetable and fresh fruit juices are useful, the vegetable juices are more alkalinizing and contain less sugar. Fast one day a week on juice and khitchri. Another alternative every month do a 3 day juice fast along with khitchri once everyday. And twice a year, as part of your bi-annual liver detox, do a 7 day juice fast. Since everyone is unique, protocol for an individual is to be worked out by Vaidya. For children, in India, we give Janma Ghuti which has several herbs to reduce insulin resistance. Since infants take bitter herbs right from few months age, the chances of developing insulin resistance reduce substantially. Low level of physical activity is the driving force. Muscle tissue takes up 95 percent of the glucose that insulin helps the body utilize, inactivity further reduces the muscles' ability to use insulin effectively. The muscle of the hind arm starts showing flabbiness, an indication for vaidya. This of course happens when women approach menopause or get affected by PCOS. Herbs aimed at insulin resistance and improving circulation(Vata) include fenugreek, gudmar, Tulsi, Giloy, Karela, ginger, Jamun, peeper longum, black peeper, arjuna, trifla, psyllium, cinnamon, shilajit, Kutaj, Chirait. Each herb has a wide spectrum of area of activity and relative proportion of each herb should be worked out specific to each patient. Some herbs can be omitted also, if unnecessary for some. Herbs for PCOS, hormonal rebalance, include Shatawari, Aloe-vera, Licorice, Aswagandha, Goxura, Ashoka, Amla, Lodhra, Jackfruit bark, Drumstick, mango bark. Author has used mango seeds, okra seeds, papaya seeds also some times. Ayurveda offers so many herbs for tackling Insulin resistance, some of them have been studied in various trials and the global references to them may be found in: José A. Olalde Rangel, Meyer Magarici, Francis Amendola, and Oswaldo del Castillo " The Systemic Theory of Living Systems. Part IV: Systemic Medicine— The Praxis " Evid. Based Complement. Altern. Med., December 2005; 2: 429 - 439. The table containing various herbs is available online at: http://ecam.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/content/full/2/4/429/TBL5 We traced a full circle. No specific herb can be suggested without examining the patient. Panchgavya medicines can be picked up if you are from India and visit India sometime. Remotely, author would suggest safe home remedy, which you can try just for 2-4 weeks and report the result on-list so athat all members can know. 1. Let her take thrice a day, half lemon juice mixed in half glass (100 ml) water, 1-2 pinches sea salt, 1/4 tsp turmeric powder and jaggery/honey as a sweetner added. Take at breakfast, before lunch and before dinner. 2. soak 1/2 tsp fenugreek seeds in 1/2 cup water for overnight and drink only water at breakfast time. 3. 1/4 tsp cinnamon powder licked in honey, just before starting the meal. adjust powder and honey such that no mouth sores occur. start with little less cinnamon and increase gradually to 1/4 tsp. 4. Avoid all processed food, refined floor, sugar, fast foods. Green gram is the wonder food whenever skin problems encountered. 5. Avoid all synthetic soaps, cosmetics. Use herbal soap powders discussed in an article http://health.ayurveda/message/6924 Ref: 1. Kerry M. Hanson, Enrico Gratton and Christopher J. Bardeen (2006). Guest guest
Are you certain she does not have a suntan? The areas where you say the skin has not changed color do not tan in the sun. If the child is dark they become very dark when exposed to the sun and reduce the color in the winter again roopa_sriii <roopa_sriii wrote: I went though my daughter's body, she is not patchy, i mean to say her darkening of skin is more of uniform thoughout the body which exposed to sun/water in pool, rather than patchy, her skin color at the place which covered by swim suite is slightly better comapared to other part.<snip>

Now she can take combinations directly without grinding to paste etc. > 3. where do i get Panchgavya medicines in bangalore? could this be > given to my child too. if so what quantity for me & my kid?or how to > use it. Panchgavya meds not exported, they need to be carried by patient him/herself, when U.S.A. is concerned. They are available in cities in Maharashtra, M.P., U.P., Delhi, Rajastan. For Diabetes, PCOS, Insulin resistance, author makes combinations of these. Herbal formulation along with panchgavya meds are made patient-specific and offered. In Bangalore some patients take these, couriered from places where they are made/distributed. Author is not yet aware if someone sells these in Bangalore. > 4. I confused abt the safe home remedy 1-5 you have mentioned, is it > for me as a parent who had GD or for my child to reduce her insulin > resistance, if its for my kid can i do follow these home remedies to. Remedy 1-3 are for your daughter only. For you, dose needs to be doubled. Recommendations 4,5 can be followed by both. > 5. regarding the 3rd home remedy, how many times a day should i do > this, is it before starting any meal, like 2-3 times a day? Cinnamon+honey is to be licked before meals. If she takes meal 2-3 times a day, she can take 2-3 times a day. > 6. Whats the most effective remedy for my daughter of 3 yrs old to > have so that can control insulin resistance problem. Depending on your situation in U.S.A., availability of materials, you can follow one or all three home remedies. Start with 1,2 first and add no. 3 after 2 weeks. If you start all three together, immune system will get activated, and if she gets healing crisis (low fever, cough, cold, erruptions, bodyache, vomits, loose motions 2-3 times a day), it will subside by itself. It may be necessary to reduce the dose or even stop the remedy for a day or two. Once the crisis subsides, continue again. HOme remedies are also seen to precipitate worries due to healing crisis, which patient confuses with new disease. Reg. suggestion#5 (bath powder), panchgavya offers a soap made from fullers earth, which is seen to clean up toxins trapped in upper skin layers. But it needs to be carried by patient while going to U.S.A. This soap is most convenient to use. It maintains the sweat pores open and keep the blood circulation in good order. Guest guest
I am very fair skinned with blue eyes, and I spend a lot of time in the sun and am very dark right now, except where my bathing suit is of course. Also you can still tan or burn even with clouds as the UV rays still come through. ____________ > It could be suntan too.. but whenever its very dark cloudy, i took her > to pool, even then she tanned.. donn't understand if its for > sun/clorine in water.
