Dear Katherina,

The ayurvedic approach to fight NMD revolves round the

tridoshic especially Vata balancing. You know walking

movement is made possible due to normal functions of

Vata (Ayurvedic motility control panel).

The definition of Vata itself explains that normal

function of Vata is regulation of motor & sensory

functions. Therefore deregulations of Vata result in

to the onset of a disease usually manifests as an

impairment of these functions.

Vata gets deregulated in two ways

(i)Degeneration (Dhatukshaya) and

(ii)Local blockage of neuromuscular channels

(Margavrodha)

The basic etiologies include faulty diet and Trauma.

NMD affects some part of the neuromuscular system viz.

the muscles, the peripheral motor nerves or the muscle

controlling nerve cells (motor neurons) in the spinal

cord. Walking disabilities are more prominent.

Motor neurons are nerve cells located in brain, brain

stem, and spinal cord that serve as controlling units

and vital communication links between the nervous

system and the voluntary muscles of the body. Messages

from motor neurons in the brain (called upper motor

neurons) are transmitted to motor neurons in the

spinal cord (called lower motor neurons) and from them

to particular muscles.

All neuromuscular diseases are progressive in nature,

and all results in muscle weakness and fatigue. Some

NMDs are present at birth, some manifest in childhood,

and others have an adult onset.

The disease may be passed down through family genetic

lines. At other times there is not a family history

and the disease is the result of a spontaneous genetic

mutation, or an abnormal immune response or an unknown

cause. But in every case Vata deregulation is the

primary cause.

Ayurvedic Approach of treatment:

Ayurvedic treatments focus on Tridosha balancing and

empowerment of dhatus. Thereby focus on treating or

delaying symptoms, enhancing physical mobility and

preventing cardiac and respiratory complications.

Ayurvedic approach includes following measures:-

1.Panchkarma Procedures: Til Mash Pinda Swedana,

Anuvasana Vast both are useful to support

Neuro-muscular system.

2.For heart and lungs support we suggest effortful

practice of Bhastrika Pranayama.

3.Mamsagni Rasayana is specific ayurvedic preparation

for NMS and has promising results. Some ayurvedic

herbs viz. Strobilanthes heyneanus Nees. (Sahachara),

Vitex nedundo (Nirgundi) and Sida retusa (Bala) are of

vital use. These can be administered as medicated oils

or as food supplements.

4.Nutritional support (oral and through Panch karma

procedures) is very important.

Prognosis:

Walking disabilities are described as difficult to

cure (Krichasadhya). 3

Even after all efforts, complete relief may not be

possible.

Dear Doctor,

Thanks for your reply. Can you supply some details

about your clinical profile. I am planning a short

trip to India in September and would like to visit

your office with my friend who is suffering from ALS

with CLL. Thanks again!
