Guest guest
I'm writing this mail to clear my confusion in the diagnosis of Sciatica and IVDP on basis of Ayurvedic terminology. In Ayurveda diseases which causes difficulty to raise the leg is included in Gridhrasi. Normally sciatica is considered as gridhrasi. My doubt is that even in IVDP also the pain radiates to leg and there is discomfort in raising the leg,but my teachers say it as Kati graha. But i cannot accept it completely. Guest guest
Dear Riyaz, We should be faithful to the Ayurvedic symptomatology when we are working in comparison of modern medicine terminology. When Inter-vertebral Disc Prolapse ( I think that is what you mean by IVDP ) causes pain in the sciatic nerve due to compression as well as limpness, it should be treated as 'Grudhrasi' and when pain is limited to lumbo-sacral region limiting it's movement, it should be treated as 'Kati-graha'. It would be interesting to note that both conditions are classified under 'Vata Vyaadhi' and that the pathology of disc prolapse also termed as 'Sransa' is described under Vata derangement (Dooshti) symptoms ie " Sransa Vyaasa Vyadha Swaapa Saada Ruk Toda Bhedanam ..... " So essentially the treatment approach would be the same though you may need to give more Snehan Swedan in Grudhrasi compared to Kati-graha. I would like to make a suggestion to you. As this forum has participants who may be alternate healers but not trained in medical colleges, there are chances that abbreviations may not give the total perspective of your opinion/query. So always use full and standard recognised medical/general terms so that all can participate and contribute. I wii give one example - RVF in general/cardiac terms means Right Ventricular Failure whereas in gynaecology it would mean Recto-Vaginal Fistula. Such vast difference can occur when we use abbreviations. So, if possible see that all of this group participates.
